They were both creepy dark games trying to unnerve you. They both gave you some flexibility in the way you approached the game and how you could upgrade your character. Gameplay wise they were very similar.

I don't really understand the Bioshock hate anyway, it's a fantastic game, and yes, at this very moment it completely destroys System Shock 2, for obvious reasons.

I love bioshock but no, SS2 is far deeper than BS and lacks pretty much all of the intricacies of SS2.

The article is wrong. Bioshock isn't a spiritual successor, deadspace is. Bioschock has absolutely nothing remotely related to SS2, deadspace on the other hand is following everything to the letter (even the logo's are references).

So let me get this right. You think the developers of System Shock 2, Irrational Games, did not make Bioshock as a spiritual successor to SS2?

Irrational Games = 2K Boston (who I now believe is called Irrational Boston or something like that) & 2K Australia

Yes. Deadspace has far more in common with SS2 than Bioshock. I'm not saying that BS is a bad game or anything, I loved it but they took out the deeper parts of the gameplay from SS2.

SS2 is still my favourite game of all time, I finished Bioshock once but completed SS2 three times, almost back to back and always found new things on each play though. For me, Bioshock was to SS2, what Deus Ex 2 was to the original, still a great game, but dumbed down slightly too much for the consoles.

"Bioschock has absolutely nothing remotely related to SS2"

Did I just read that correctly?

Bioshock is chock full of SS2 influences (and the word "influences" is being used generously here). It was literally like they had a SS2 check list and went through it marking off every item.

It may lack some of the intracasies (as you put it), but that is a far cry from having "nothing remotely related" to it.

Dead Space might have been spookier than Bioshock, but I wouldn't say it had more in common with SS2 then BS.

Dead Space felt like it was inspired by SS2, sure (with a heavy dose of Event Horizon thrown in), but I don't think it feels like a spiritual sequel in any way. Bioshock has an awful lot of SS2 in it, sure it's "dumbed down", and it's a different setting, but I think you can see the origins there.

Not liking SS2 though, there are no words, it's one of the greatest games :(

Did no-one else see the Zero Ounctuation Bioshock review? He compared the 2 and it was quite plain to see Bioshock is inspired by System Shock 2, to the point he keeps saying they're the same. That might be a bit far I suppose, but they do share a lot of things.

Anyone know any direct download service (read that as "legal") that sells this? I really fancy it.

I'd kick the living daylights out of the producers of Tipping Point - Ghandi

I always considered the fact that its made by the same studio, and the fact its got the word "shock" in the title to mean that it was quite literally the spiritual successor to System Shock 2...? Or is that kerazy?

You can remap the controls. But the mappings they have do make sense, considering the game is a bit more involved than just circle-strafing all the time.

You should try the first one. Now that's an interface.

From the sounds of things, I'm not sure he could handle the first

I remapped SS2 to WASD though. You're going to take on what you're peeking at anyway.
In Thief, I keep the lean look - hardly ever want to take on what I see around corners in that.

Weird eating of a middle chunk of my post there EG

The old controls did throw me a bit but nothing a quick trip to settings couldn't fix. Ah its the simple things like rebinding every key that make a pc game.

On another note i played for an hour last night and screamed twice in that time. Its good to be back!

Only twice? I must have screamed a good 5/6 times in the first hour...

If you've not played it before, I'd recommend vanilla.

But if you have, have you tried reinstalling the patch?

The point is, the tilde key doesnt work in the game so I couldnt do any of the psy stuff in training so gave up, I cant find it in the controls to remap???

I'm sure you can find the text file in the install directory which shows all the mappings you've done and edit that. It'll be a .cfg file.

I was stuck installing the mods for a while, until I realised you need to make a res directory within the mods folder and put them all in there. I have the better looking enemies and the higher res textures. Who knows, with this release in easily moddable form we could get some more work done by enthusiasts. Meanwhile, I'm going to answer all my phone calls with "This is Xerxes" for a while.
