So, bit of a Daft Punk n00b here.
Absolutely loved the Tron Legacy soundtrack, and the album of remixes that went with it. I think it was the strings and the humungous sweeping chords etc that did the trick.

Given that, would I like any of the 'regular' Daft Punk stuff?
Just buy their greatest hits album - it's only 3.49 on Amazon apparently.

It's a very strange album, not at all what I was expecting. The songs all feel really random, maybe that's why they called it Random Access Memories. There were a couple of moments where I started to wonder if it was a fake, which can't be a good thing..

Daft Punk forgot how to Daft Punk.

Had a listen on the way to work and its OK, if a little bland. Only made it to track 5 (which is the best so far). Was hoping for something a bit more basey after their Alive albums, but its all a little... beige.

Yes but you described them as a poor mans Chemical Brothers. So you can see why I wanted a second opinion.

I now regret that because they shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as The Chemical Brothers.

Daft Punk are a poor man's Mirwais.

This was released 14 years ago and feels fresher even now than anything Daft Punk ever did.
  • Deleted user 14 May 2013 09:21:40
I think I'll listen to Mirwais today instead of DP.

    Full album from 2000, here.

Listened to it on my commute, so that's the second time. It is fucking strange. A lot of robo ballads, a lot of montage music and some stuff that wouldn't seem out of place on the original Willy Wonka film OST.

It's bonkers, and I've not really heard anything like it. This is why I love Daft Punk really. Alive 2007 is my favorite album still.

I am also an utter sucker for anything with funk guitar on it. Explains my love of RHCP even though they are utter shit.

Yeah this is a weird album. Feeling track 3 (aside from the Arnie voiceover dude), the percussion at the end is niiice. The rest is just odd, track 2 is particularly shit.

They've never topped the Tron soundtrack IMO.

Isn't that just a concert of their previous stuff?

Looking at all the albums now and trying to choose which one I want, discovery sounds the best.

It's a concert of their previous stuff, but it's all remixed and mashed together, with a much stronger baseline. It's glorious. Out of their studio albums discovery is probably my favourite, but they all offer something different.

That's probably my least favorite. To me it's just a load of orchestral arrangements of the same refrain. Solar Sailor and Derezzed are quality. I've never seen the film or been into tron, so perhaps this is what is missing.

As I don't know the songs the crowd are a distraction. Would rather the mix with no crowd.
Think I will go with discovery , their first album is a bit too traditional house for me on quick listens. Human after all has some great tracks but less consistent than discovery.

You can't hear the crowd, and when you do it adds to the atmosphere of the album. It's fucking brilliant. I would sell a kidney to see them live.

For me it's always been about the hard slow beats and this album doesn't have that. I went over to my receiver to check if i had turned down the bass by accident or something.

A few of the tracks are ok but some are bloody awful :/

    I'm a grumpy bastard.

  • Deleted user 14 May 2013 12:52:43
Well I purchased the mp3 album discovery off amazon and has it on whilst cleaning and making lunch. It's bloody fantastic isn't it, each track has all these little variations that keep them interesting and no two tracks are the same.
Just burnt it to cd for the car with robot rock and get lucky added to the end. :)

No builders Neil, that was a one day job with a quick pop back to put it the last panel. Just me and one kid today.

Thought I'd give RAM another go out of fairness, but my opinion hasn't changed so far. Giorgio by Moroder is super-frustrating because there's a definitely a good song in it somewhere but it becomes totally OTT with string sections and fucking electric guitar solos.

I can't think of much that it wouldn't put to shame to be fair.
