Just bricked my ps3.

    heres what happened:

    i had linux installed but to get rid of it i attempted a full hdd reformat. (from the ps3 front end, of course)

    3 hours later reformat was complete.

    to make sure linux was gone, i decided to try to restart in other os mode.

    to my surprise, the initial linux loading screen appeared (2 penguins) but then it stopped and failed to load.

    i switched off the ps3 and when i started again only a black screen appeared.

    Tried this a few times with diff av cables, no joy.

    Seems dead because the controller wont sync with the machine either.

    not too bothered, il just bring it back to GAME. Glad i didnt get a n import now!

    Isn't the playstation OS in the bios still, if you take out the hdd it should boot back up into the regular OS I assume.

    yeah thats what i thought,

    what kind of shit full format is that ? linux stays on the hdd (parts of it, at least) as well as all my user name info. 3 hours??

    was actually bringing the ps3 back because it has the loud fan problem. tried to clear everything and this happens.

    this is probably an easier problem of the staff to recognise though

    DO NOT WORRY i've done this twice.

    when turning on the console instead of letting go of the power sensor, hold it down untill the console beeps, it'll then boot into the gameOS instead of trying to boot linux.

    it's not bricked.

    the gameOS saves very little on the HDD it's all firmware flash memory.

    salutes to whoever calmed me down in my thread like this.

    the key part is that the console is off when you hold the power button down, if it's already powered up and you hold it down all that will do is restart it on the current OS.

    Yup, just keep holding power button. I bricked mine too. You lose a few settings, but the core OS is untouchable.

    I hear the breakdown numbers are gigantic. It seems that the darn thing only lasts about 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 years or something.

    its all packed up now, il try the hold power button idea but its still going back because of its loud fan.

    / to lazy to open box + remove contents for nothing

    btw, mod should probably edit the thread title to avoid further controversy. "PS3 problem" should do nicely
