Ahh, I love em.
Ever since Elite I've been bastard mad for the things. Problem is, there doesn't seem to be all that many knocking around so with the help of yous lots I thought it would be a good idea to trade recommendations and maybe find something that I've/you've/we've/he's/she's missed.
So.
Independence War 2 - Edge of Chaos
An amazing game which still looks pretty good by most standards. Incredibly accurate physics model, loads of atmosphere and intrigue and almost completely free-form with missions here and there and a great story. The downsides are that it's shockingly hard. If you get into a firefight, you'll need to twist all three axis of your joystick this way and that to get away in one piece.
Highly recommended.
Freelancer
Top "free-form" fun and a love it/hate it control scheme (I loved it). Looks great if you can forgive the fact the planets are mere kilometres across. A good story with some fair voice acting, albeit with generic characters. It's failings are numerous, but most of all, once you've finished the single player game it seems empty with nothing more to do than get the best ship and fill in the blank spots on the map.
Still very good though, also highly recommended.
X2: The Threat
I had high hopes for this little outing and while it looked nice and had all those things that make you feel like you're cruising through space if also felt a bit over the top. And while cruising about you'd have to constantly avoid the thousands of other ships, stations and general crap strewn by the armful across each sector. It didn't feel like space so much as a summer bank holiday trip to the beach. I like my space big and comparatively empty with the occasional scrap, chat and trade here and there, not chocked to the gills with more clobber than my graphics card can cope with.
Also the story sports some of the most excrutiatingly poor character animation and dialogue you'll ever cringe at, it's shocking. You'll also notice that the whole game only has about 4 voice actors who do everything from welcome you aboard stations to declair war on your grainery.
Recommended, but in this space, everyone can hear you scream.
I'll let Lutzy fill in Freespace 2. Does anyone else want to add to the pile? I know there's a few of you.
