    Ahh, I love em.

Ever since Elite I've been bastard mad for the things. Problem is, there doesn't seem to be all that many knocking around so with the help of yous lots I thought it would be a good idea to trade recommendations and maybe find something that I've/you've/we've/he's/she's missed.

    So.

Independence War 2 - Edge of Chaos

An amazing game which still looks pretty good by most standards. Incredibly accurate physics model, loads of atmosphere and intrigue and almost completely free-form with missions here and there and a great story. The downsides are that it's shockingly hard. If you get into a firefight, you'll need to twist all three axis of your joystick this way and that to get away in one piece.

    Highly recommended.

    Freelancer

Top "free-form" fun and a love it/hate it control scheme (I loved it). Looks great if you can forgive the fact the planets are mere kilometres across. A good story with some fair voice acting, albeit with generic characters. It's failings are numerous, but most of all, once you've finished the single player game it seems empty with nothing more to do than get the best ship and fill in the blank spots on the map.

Still very good though, also highly recommended.

    X2: The Threat

I had high hopes for this little outing and while it looked nice and had all those things that make you feel like you're cruising through space if also felt a bit over the top. And while cruising about you'd have to constantly avoid the thousands of other ships, stations and general crap strewn by the armful across each sector. It didn't feel like space so much as a summer bank holiday trip to the beach. I like my space big and comparatively empty with the occasional scrap, chat and trade here and there, not chocked to the gills with more clobber than my graphics card can cope with.

Also the story sports some of the most excrutiatingly poor character animation and dialogue you'll ever cringe at, it's shocking. You'll also notice that the whole game only has about 4 voice actors who do everything from welcome you aboard stations to declair war on your grainery.

Recommended, but in this space, everyone can hear you scream.

I'll let Lutzy fill in Freespace 2. Does anyone else want to add to the pile? I know there's a few of you.

How does it play and what does it look like would be nice, but then again, I think we all know what WC is about :) But that does remind me!

    Wing Commander: Privateer

In the same vein as Elite and so on you can do pretty much whatever you like, trade, fight, collect bounty, etc. This remake is excellent and really worth the effort. Once you get into it it's a cracking game. Don't expect the latest graphical wonders though, it looks like dogshit.

    Highly recommended.

X Wing Alliance was a bloody good game.

Not sure how it has stood up to the ravages of time though as I can't find my copy anymore.

Tie Fighter, obviously. Best 'you are a space fighter pilot' game ever =)

    Probably not exactly appropriate, but:

    Shorthike and Space Station Manager

Space Station Manager (and its in-dev sequel, Shorthike) is a quiet, pleasing sim game where you build a space station from scratch. Balancing life support, power, cash flow, employment, and heat flow, you can eventually build some pretty huge and complicated structures.

    Like lego in space.

I actually attempted to play that game once. I tried really hard, and even went back to it a few times. After managing to land on a planet, and walking around for a while on the bland, dull landscape with its bland, dull trees and two-poly animals, I went back to my ship, took off my space helmet and forced the airlock open. My last thought as my brain was sucked out through my nose and ears was something about user interfaces, but I guess we'll never know what it was, now.

All I remember of Colony Wars is that about 5 missions in it became impossibly hard and I gave up on it.....

What about the original X-Wing and TIE Fighter?

Co-incidently I found my copy yesterday!

Excellent end to the X-Wing/TIE Fighter series, decent campaign which I never completed due to my inability to escape the Death Star Mk II's reactor core exploding in the Falcon which is the very final mission!

    This space left intentionally blank.

The Freespace franchise was one of the best, if not the best. Unfortunatly, also one of the last of a dying breed it seems. :(

Well I've been saying for years that a Star Wars/Elite hybrid would sell millions, especially if I was in charge. ;-)

I've pimped Darkstar One before, I'm quite looking forward to it, it should be ace if it delivers.

Trailer looks pretty good, very B5 feel to it.

With a name like that though I must insist it features an alien that is made from a beach ball. :-)

    Wing Commander

Lions, spaceships, porn stars, Gimli, the bad guy from Star Trek Generations and Luke Skywalker. Anything more I need to add?

I never got that far...was too impatient about wanting to join the rebellion properly so gave up. Fantastic game though, looked the mutts nuts.

People go on about a TIE remake, I'd rather have XW:A, especially as you could, with a bit of work, really go to town with the smuggler/trader idea.

A bump from the distant past for a gaggle of new stuff courtesy of Rock Paper Shotgun.

Article on Notch's new space venture

Wing Commander Saga is finally ready after 10 years in development. Also it's free.

    A bit different is FTL.

The game is split into two major parts: exploration and combat. You explore by making faster-than-light jumps over vast distances in space; arriving at locations containing text-based events that have a variety of choices and outcomes. Your crew will improve with experience, while your ship can be upgraded with advanced weaponry and equipment purchased with collected scrap metal. Fighting enemy ships involves real-time management of crew, power distribution and weapons. Check out the video on the front page to see it in action.
Demo is available, trying to fund the full release via Kickstarter.

The day charity died - NEVER FORGET

(the mic was OK in the end)

FTL is definitely on my must get list.

I'd like something a bit more buildy in space. Most of the games with colonisation and building focus purely on preparation for attack, is there anything else out there with more options than massive space war?

Freespace 2 & Warhead. 'Nuff said. Also have fond memories of Starglider 2, even though it wasn't exactly a great game.
