I use Giganews, they've got several different packages, dependent on how much you want to download in a month. Header downloads are free, retention is around 57 days now, 10 simultaneous connections and you've no worries about speed as they'll max out your connection no problem.

You can sign up and try them out for 3 days/1 gig download as well without any worries, I've been a very happy customer of their's for 4 years.

so ive been looking at newgroups and prices, what does everyone use?

Agent Premium Newsgroups are top in ratings in the guide posted earlier on in this thread and are 15 dollars, is it worth the 8 quid a month to switch from torrents to newsgroups?

I use Grabit and the associated shemes Usenet access. Its $12 per month for 20 gig download and they accept paypal, which is a nice bonus.

It's well worth the money. You can download your stuff at full speed without worrying about maxing out your upload, or having to share anything back. You have less worries about people harvesting your IP address from the torrent. You don't have to worry about any of the Media Sentry type programs that can send corrupt data to you. You can usually get your TV programs a little bit earlier than it takes for the torrent to appear.

And, because Usenet is (so far) less popular / more specialist than the torrent sites, they aren't under attack from hackers, RIAA, spam artists, etc.

Pipex charge 2 for every 5 gigs of bandwisth. You can buy indefinite amounts but it gets reset on the 1st of every month. I accidentally clicked the button too many times and ended up with 100 gigs of available bandwidth!

Newsleecher is the way on PC. The supersearch feature is as good as searching manually on newsbin, and saves you having to download lots of headers, which you don't need.

On the Mac, the newsreader of choice is Unison.

Oh, and consider somebody like newsdemon.com for a subscribed service. ISP's news servers are pretty much sh1t. And I've got blueyonder, who reckon they're not bad..!

Demon USED to be good for newsgroups, back in the late 90s. I used to spend hours sat at the PC posting messages and perusing the binaries (as it were).

Now I just have the links Furbs posts, which let's face it can be a little bit wrong at times.

There isnt any intuitive software to be honest. I've tried all the major ones and none of them are especially userfriendly. You might want to google "nzb". I'm not going to go in to details, but they help.

AFAIK Usenet and newsgroups are interchangable terms, but theres probably some old school anal types will disagree.

Im with Zen and I thought the say "why pay for it when its free", but after downloading quite a lot of things and never getting any of them to have 100% retention I gave up and went back to pay usenet servers.

Is Giganews the best to subscribe to? I'm thinking about signing up to their Diamond plan.

What about NewsBin Pro for downloading the files?

NewsDemon.com? You should, we researched loads of different sites and this offered the best package methinks.

I use giganews, Newzbin and Unison (except when I'm in Windows, where I use Grabit).

Yeah, they are a bit cheaper than Giganews and they accept PayPal so it seems like a good deal.

usenetserver started to have some problems on day 2 of my trial and it got progressively worse so i went elsewhere. now i use :-

    newsdemon for access
    newzbin for my searches
    newsleecher for downloading.

only just recently worked out that once setup correctly, newsleecher automatically does all the PAR nonsense.

it pauses the PARfiles in the queue. it checks the downloads and only if something has gone awry, does it unpause and download the relevant PAR files. it'll then repair, extract and delete the excess.

    idleware ftw.

    Oh, that's very cool!

Grabit automatically repairs and extracts files, but isn't intelligent enough to only download PARs when needed.

Um, no; they're the things that ensure that 99.9% of what you download aren't corrupt.

Astraweb is good, especially for low users, as you can buy a 90GB pakage for a one-off $25 fee and you have as long as you like to use that limit up.

I haven't used them yet though, just signed up to them
