I think titan x was actually slower than the 980 ti in some tests.

So I've got a 750ti, very happy with it as it can run everything I throw at it including gta 5.

However I'm going to be buying the vive soon - is it better to go for one of these pascal cards or get a 980ti when the prices drop?

The 980ti will never drop below the 1070 price on a proper site as they've already halted production, you might get it cheap on ebay but honestly I'd recommend going for a 1070 over an ebay'd 980ti.

@ibenam I'd suggest a 1070 or 1080 for Vive use. It'll have good driver support for longer and has supposedly better support for VR.

Think silentbob said it in the VR thread but it's nothing to worry about. VR is currently built to the lowest common denominator (ie 970) so you could easily wait another 2 years before it takes advantage of the new cards IMO

The only caveat to that is the possibility that we might start to see VR games with image quality settings - supersampling would be particularly helpful, assuming the hardware performance is there.

On the Vive, Elite Dangerous looks like shit without SS, and runs like shit with SS (on my 970 anyway). The ability to run at double the resolution and scale it down would make a huge difference.

I've got my eye on what AMD do with Polaris. The Nvidia cards are too expensive for me and I need something lower end that will hit the 1080p60 sweet spot. VR is not a consideration in my life.

Yeah, curiously, I don't really give a shit about VR. Possibly something to do with not having 500, but still, not bothered really.

It's certainly not something people SHOULD give a shit about unless they're interested in it at this stage.

Yeah I guess. It's just that all my adult life I've had a woody for developments in tech and especially gaming hardware, so it surprises me that I'm not out mugging people.

I can say that I have it and it's awesome, but not fully there yet as consumer tech. It's a lot of fun, and if improvements can come in the future, such as wireless connectivity, a device that can do AR as well as VR and a lighter headset, then I'll be absolutely delighted.

The 1070/1080 seem pretty good and if someone was building a PC now I'd definitely tell them to wait for the non-reference versions of them, but it doesn't seem like enough of a leap to move from my 970. I have a 1440p/144hz monitor but to be honest the 1440p doesn't make such a huge difference ( I don't think the monitor is big enough for it to matter much, I don't notice it when I do play games in 1400p) and the 144hz is nice but I can reach it on so few games it doesn't really matter.

Seems like AMD's new range is going to be focused on low energy/heat as well so I think I'll be waiting until 2017 to upgrade now.

Huh, just been given a 1080.

Shame I don't have a desktop to plug it into any more, but I was too polite to turn it down.

Both of these things demand an explanation, you being given a 1080, and, more surprisingly, you not having a desktop PC!

@UncleLou I stopped by a localish game studio where some nvidia bods had been by and are dropping them a load to encourage development on the platform.

I don't actually have it yet, I assumed they had them already but apparently not.

@Dirtbox Ouch, bad luck. Fortunately I know a place that will responsibly recycle it.

I've got no real excuse to avoid investing in VR stuff now.

I hope there's a mod for Stalker at some point.

I just make 3d models, there is as yet no mods or tools to stand inside zbrush so it doesn't make much odds to me.

    ed: Oh, wait up http://vrclay.com/

Honestly, I'm just going to wait for HMB2 Vega cards from AMD and see how they compare with HMB2 Pascal which should be around October.

If I'm going to splash out for a top end card, I want the cutting edge/next generation, not something that is (to me) not a great deal more powerful than the current line up in the grand scheme of things. That's my opinion on the matter of course... that and that fact I'd be pretty annoyed if they pull another Ti variant out the bag.

I keep meaning to try Stalker with VorpX (vr injector), although I suspect it'll be incredibly shonky. I've had Metro running in Vr, which was pretty good until I tried to shoot someone.

The game barely holds together without some experimental third party hack, I can't see it faring well.
