It's can't really be a Nier game without Taro Yoko directing.

Platinum have never been able to pull off a passable story and Square Enix staff are no better.

A little more info from Polygon:

In a teaser trailer, Square Enix named some of the creators involved, including character designer Akihiko Yoshida, game designer Takashi Taura, game director Yoko Taro and producer Atsushi Inaba from Platinum.

According to Taro, Square Enix approached Platinum Games to developer the new Nier with the intention that they'd add more action to the game. Taro said that details on the game are secret for now, but promised more information on the new Nier project this fall.
    Good: Yoko Taro
    Bad: More action

As I understand it - Nier had exceptional character but distinctly average mechanics. If Platinum are being drafted in to tackle the latter, must be a good thing.

Pretty much spot on - perfectly playable but compared to other games yeah, from a technical stand point wasn't much to shout about. But the setting, story, soundtrack etc made it an exceptional game for me. My last playthrough (getting all endings) was last Feb, took a month off between jobs but managed to blast it in a week or so. Great times!

I'm happy that Platinum is involved. I went back to Nier a while ago to try and get the second ending, but the mediocre gameplay didn't keep my attention for long. The story was good, so with Platinum on board this game is very likely to be special.

Nah. Both the producer and director who did the original Nier are reprising their roles for the sequel. Think Platinum are mainly involved with the gameplay side.

    I hate you all.

Not really. I am a bit jealous though, Mrs Hermit won't let me buy a PS4.

Knew about this sequel for quite some time I definitely will be proceedings with the story line and clocking the hell out of it.

I'm somewhat skeptical about Platinum being able to deliver a follow up to what was essentially a more adult Zelda for non-Nintendo consoles.

It's not a good fit unless they're directed to keep the combat straight forward and 'weighty'.

Yoko Taro is still directing, so that should be keeping confidence high. Plus, with Platinum's incredible back catalogue there is no reason to expect it to be anything other than fantastic.

Yoko Taro directing, Yosuke Saito producing, Keiichi Okabe doing the soundtrack, fuckin' Akihiko Yoshida on character design, and Platinum developing. I don't think that could get any better, to be honest! And surely some of the Okami people must be at Platinum..?

Also, that clip from above is actually from last October. The German guy in it conducted this interview (interview is in English, just get past the intro).

Emil is in the game in some capacity, and it's interesting that they immediately shoot down the 'only on PS4' question. It'd be nice if it made it to XBO as well, but I imagine they're probably looking at PS4 and PC.

It might be an idea to actually play-through the original then ?
I did play for a few hours (at most) and I have had for what seems like years.

I had it sat on my shelf since just after release, Duff. Started it last summer, took a break (for about five months!) and finally went back and finished it a week or so ago. It really is very special if it grabs you. Make sure to do at least up to the second ending.
