I really didn't see what was so great about Sicario. This does look excellent though.

If this film is a box office ht then they'll let Villeneuve do his beloved Dune film. Craig wants him for the next Bond film but so much depends on the script and Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are very hit and miss.

He's got nothing on his slate at the moment. I'm well up for Dune directed by Villeneuve.

Back to this. Cannot wait to see this but I'll have to. Tickets booked for Saturday 14th on IMAX.

I wonder what it will be like in 3D IMAX. I'd love to see it in 2D IMAX but my local Cineworld is only showing it in 3D IMAX. I'll probably see it twice anyway.

Are there any 2D IMAX showings? Normally when it's 3D IMAX showings, its only 3D showings.

After Enemy, Prisoners, Sicario and Arrival (not watched Incendies yet) I had absolute faith that Denis Villeneuve wouldn't fuck this up. And with Roger Deakins and Zimmer involved as well it's potential was huge.

But it's a little bit shit right?, it can't possibly live up to the hype. I need to lower my expectations because right now I'm expecting it to be the best filme I've ever seen.

That's offering you the best possible cinema experience and then deliberately handicapping it with the worst thing to ever happen to large screen film viewing. I'm all for choice, but don't force people to settle for the inferior option.

I've just checked our booking and it's 2D IMAX for this. Manchester Printworks. Here's no 3D option from what I can see.

At 35 I still haven't watched the first film. I'm guessing it's a bit dated if I haven't seen before but I will give it a watch this weekend

Has ages incredibly well actually. It's slower paced than modern films and isn't as action packed but that's to it's benefit.

Looks amazing still. Watch it you loon.

The final cut fixes a few of the dodgy effects. It holds up incredibly well imo, still one of the best looking films ever made.

Its one of the few older science-fiction films that really hasn't dated, age-wise, at all. Beautiful film.
The only thing that really bothers me about this new one is the line "he's building an army!" which just makes me think its a completely different film, tonally, than the first, but that's probably just to make the trailer seem a bit action packed as the director is fantastic and I doubt he'd just make an action packed pile of nothing

The few reviews I've read say the trailers are shit and give no indication of what the film is actually like. The film is tonally very similar to the original apparently.

Yeah, it's not really aged at all other than a few obvious computer related things and deckards festive shirts.

I just went for a pre-going out nap and stuck it on Now TV in the bedroom and it's the version with the voice over. Why the hell would they have that on there?

    @Decks

That's my favourite version. I know they added the voice over because they were worried the American audiences would have trouble understanding it. They elected Trump so that were probably right...

The voice over absolutely nails the hard boiled detective noir feel though. It's just not the same without it. I think people are dismissive and snooty of it because of the reasons behind the voice over was added (not saying it's your reason)

I also think it's better being a shorter movie and some of the cut stuff was with good reason, imho.

Isn't it absolutely trash? Doesn't Harrison Ford sound like he's reading the Yellow Pages?

So I watched the first film finally . Yeah it was good but not great .. I think I like the world and the questions it creates rather than the film itself if that makes sense . But I do have to remember it's nearly 40 years old. Very ambiguous like Inception and i can see how it inspired lots of films that came after. I'm now all set up for the new one .

Quite looking forward to this but if I'm missing out on something with his films and him being a movie darling atm maybe I will bounce hard off of this too.

Ford rightly thought it would be a bad idea so he deliberately delivered his lines very flat in the hope that they wouldn't use it.

Do we know if they've kept the most iconic element of the Blade Runner universe?

    The blimps?!

That was absolutely sublime. Utterly magnificent.

The first half hour or so felt like a very well made but fairly standard film and people were giddy about references to the first one. However, after that it progressively became more and more quiet. During the last hour it felt as if everyone - myself included - were holding their breath.

I remained in my seat for 5 minutes after it finished, staring at the credits, mouth ajar, still soaking in what I'd just seen.

Oh and no worries about it being too action-oriented. The trailer packed the very few action scenes in but there are only a handful and they take up maybe 10% of the film. I suspect they deliberately wanted to put viewers on the wrong foot.
The bulk of it though is very very VERY Blade Runner. It's got the ambient music, slow, wide shots, breathtaking futuristic panoramas and everything else that made the first great. Except they turned it all up to 11.

    Go see it. It's phenomenal.

I don't know what to do about this movie #firstworldproblems

the original Blade Runner is a movie I wanted to love and seems almost tailor made for me. I'm a movie buff, who loves sci-fi, loves a lot of Philip K. Dick's work, and considers another of Ridley's movies (Alien) to be probably my favourite film of all time. But....

Blade Runber just didn't do it for me. Visually it was absolutely astounding and still holds up today IMO, but as a movie I just found it incredibly slow and dull. I wanted to give it a chance so I own the Final Cut and even went as far as to read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" (which isn't one of Dick's best IMO. He's all about the vision which I think works better in his short stories).

TL:DR I wasn't particularly looking forward to the sequel.

However, now the sequel that I thought looked terrible in the trailers is getting rave reviews. 5 out of 5 in both Empire and in the Guardian for example. Both say it's at least as good, if not even better than the original (which though I didn't like it, is generally considered great).

Now I'm tempted to see the sequel, yet I don't know if I'm setting myself up for 2 hours of boredom....

@Pierre2k It's very slow as well, if you didn't like that about the first you won't like it about the new one either.
2049's very much in the same vein; a lot of the scenes are all about atmosphere and the setting without much of anything happening. I totally lapped it up, I can see why others wouldn't.
