OK, I managed to defeat the mission boss in the mine, though my characters were all Lv 10 and maxed out their jobs (seems to be Lv4 tops, so the idea is to learn as many jobs as possible, rather than achieve high job levels); I had a Ninja, White Mage, Swordmaster and Valkyrie.

If you're only just starting, I would recommend you get to at least Lv 2 as Freelancers, as that gives a job ability which provides immunity to trap effects in dungeons. Unfortunately, I didn't find out about this until after the first dungeon.

The tactic to follow, with the mine mission boss, is to Default until after the boss uses Default themselves, they only seem to use it once at a time. At that point you hit with as many attacks as possible and then fall back onto Default, once more; you might want to cast some Shell spells, using Brave, as the boss' major spell can still take down characters with low Magic Defence in one go, i.e. my Ninja.

Thanks. Never thought of checking them for exclusive collectors editions. Sadly my problem now is deciding if CE is worth it as it looks nice but with the region-protection and the usual Jrpg in Europe scenarios I bought a US system this time. May bite me when I move back to the UK na have to pay lots to inport stuff. Although the wife has a UK system. Surlrisingly noticed that the latest Layton foesn't seen to be getting released in US ubtil February either.

It's weird that ShopTo have jacked the LE price up. When they first unveiled it, it was 100. Then people had a bit of a moan on Twitter and it mysteriously dropped to 80 within a few hours (which is when I ordered it). Now it's 90 :S

Always seems a bit dubious when prices fluctuate so much on an exclusive pre-launch, I might hold out for the US pack though, although it may be Gamestop exclusive, as it seems to have everything except the statue and I have to question if I REALLY need another big statue ;)

I wonder if Shopto will actually be able to sell them all at 90 or if they'll drop the price eventually, like they did with the Agarest 2 'exclusive' (retailer) limited edition. I guess Christmas might give them a boost.

There was a hidden, aka out of stock, listing on the Nintendo store which priced it at 79.99...

Something to watch out for: keep talking to the citizens in the hub town, especially the one on the stairs between the scroll shop and the equipment shop, after defeating the mines boss I spoke to them and was informed that I now had another worker in the village you're rebuilding.

Of course you do! Unless you're running out of space for them like I am, in which case of course you do!

We'll have to get a friend list of sorts going for the town side quest I'd imagine.

Knew there was something else I was forgetting, when I posted earlier, if you need to do any grinding there's a couple of time saving tips; they won't reduce the amount of effort, but literally save time:

    1.

    Bring up the party menu

Select Tactics > Config > Difficulty > Encounter Rate

Changing this to +100% drastically increases the encounter rate, you'll think you're playing an early JRPG.

    2.

When the attack animations begin in combat, press right on the d-pad twice, this speeds up the animations to ludicrous speed. Press left on the d-pad to slow down again.

Must say, this is pretty generous for a demo. This is keeping me entertained for a good while yet I reckon.

OK, the demo has a level cap of 20; my party all have Ninja, Swordmaster, White Mage and Valkyrie maxed out with one of them having Red Mage maxed as well. I might go the whole hog and max all the other classes out as well, grinding doesn't take too long with this set up; I'm presuming Jobs probably have more levels in the full game, there seems to be plenty of space to add more skills in the menu.

If you're having trouble finding a new quest to pick up, at one point, remember that you can also visit the hub town at night. The final (?) boss can wait until the morning.

I wrote up my impressions of this over here if anyone is interested: (nobody is interested).

TL:DR - basically what everyone is saying about how this over-generous demo may actually be shooting them in the foot a little.

I am interested! I did read it and very much enjoyed it. It's nice to see what it's about, because I only had a quick go and almost died in my first battle.

The clue is in the name I suppose, much as your article suggest. It's called Bravel Default, yet I neither braved nor defaulted. I imagine I'll have more fun next time, taking into consideration how you describe the rhythm of battle :)

It's certainly not a demo you can really get away with having a quick go on to decide if it's for you.

Actually, Brave/Default doesn't really do a lot for those first few battles. It's more a case of doing the old "fight two battles, sleep in the Inn" thing until you get a couple of levels under your belt. A bit of throwback grind.

I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be necessary in the full version - there's a whole bunch of story that's not present in the demo, and screenshots seem to show that you walk around with less than four characters for a bit. Thing is, if your game has more of a 21st century levelling curve, why not put that in the demo instead of putting people off?

Must say, Yenrug's tip has really sped up the grinding for me. Once you can reliably make it once round the rock without dying you can speed it right up.

Just started playing the demo and found it a bit confusing but enjoyable also. Died a couple of times before I realised I should buy extra armour and potions. Now I've gotten levelled up a bit and getting into the brave/default stuff more. I don't see how to make characters magic users, as selecting white mage doesn't give them any usable abilities. I guess I must be missing something important. Very promising game anyway.

Decided not to play the demo and save myself for the main event. I'm properly psyched up, after ten years of Final Fantasies that've only left me cold I'm hoping for an awful lot out of this.

@zoolophage You have to buy the spell scrolls from the store above the equipment seller.

I finished the demo last night, final save time of 15:59:25, have all 4 party members at Lv 20 with all jobs at Lv 4, all 7 unlockable packages ready for the full game; if anyone's interested, the contents are:

    Gameplay Reward:

    Caldislan Relief Set
    Antidote x 2
    Eye Drops x 2
    Echo Herbs x 2

    Caldislan Adventurer's Set
    Bronze Bangle x 1
    Phoenix Down x 2

    Mid-boss Reward:

    Caldislan Recovery Set
    Potion x 3
    Hi-Potion x 1

    Caldislan White Mage's Set
    Staff x 1
    Ether x 1

    Caldislan Black Mage's Set
    Rod x 1
    Ether x 1

    Boss Reward:

    Caldislan Soldier's Set
    Bronze Helm x 1
    Leather Armor x 1

    Cladislan Knight's Set
    Broadsword x 1
    Buckler x 1

Considering how absolutely basic this stuff is, it literally is starter level boosts.

@elstoof It states in the demo that the events portrayed in it are separate from the full game, it's just there as an introduction to the game mechanics. At first I was really against it, the game felt broken, but I'd pretty much gotten to grip with it by the end.

    @YenRug

Thanks for the hint. I'm looking forward to playing a bit more on tonight's journey home. My first reaction to the demo was that it was horribly random and nonsensical but I'm definitely warming to it now. It's definitely something to put a couple of hours into before drawing any firm conclusions.

Finished the demo myself now, time 13h33m, everything maxxed out. I did wonder where some of the rewards were as I approached the end of the game, but I got them all just by doing all of the missions in the end.
