Blockbuster epics with increasingly immersive worlds

More tactile physics and animations in sports and racing

The maturation of online multiplayer connectivity and services

The rebirth of indie and alternative games

My top 5 games/series' this gen would be:

    1. Pro Evolution Soccer 2014
    2. Grand Theft Auto V
    3. Mass Effect trilogy
    4. Batman: Arkham Asylum & City
    5. MotoGP 13

Sorry, RE4 was in last gen so that wins.

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

Yeah Pro Evo 14 is definitely the game of the generation.

There were releases of RE4 for all platforms this gen. Though whichever generation you play it in it's still shit.

    I agree.

Recently cleared out about 70% of my PS2 collection as, to be perfectly frank, a lot of classic games on it are now unplayable shit.

People who complain about games being better in the past need to be locked in a room with a C-64 that's prone to tape read errors.

I also think it's (on consoles) 3D graphics' coming of age. I think we'll be able to look back at stuff like Uncharted 3 and Bioshock Infinite in years to come and still find it pleasing in much the same way I can still turn on my SNES and find 2D stuff like Super Mario World and A Link To The Past decent to the look at.

    Is this out yet?

    2. Grand Theft Auto V

Bit pre-emptive given we've only had a week to play it with no multiplayer, no?

    3. Mass Effect trilogy

That's three games. Why single out one particular Pro Evo but group these?

    4. Batman: Arkham Asylum & City

    Two games, same as above.

    5. MotoGP 13

What now? Never heard of it.

LB, you really are a massive geek.

I thought this was going to be a thread about people possibly with a lot of nostalgia for bygone eras. Which was pretty bloody stupid, of course it's a video game list thread.

Seems a bit at odds with your top five being nothing but giant corporate franchises.

The only two PS2 games I liked were God of War and Dragon Quest 8 (besides Guitar Hero). And obviously God of War 1 was much better than GoW 3.
From the PS2's entire library you liked two games?

When I say I cleared out most of my collection, I still kept around 20 titles (Okami, Viewtiful Joe, God Hand, killer7, Gradius V, Capcom vs SNK 2, Guilty Gear XX #Reload, Metal Slug 3, Virtua Fighter 4 Evo, Burnout 3, etc).

Fuck this gen. Can it be over already?

Oh and I'm hoping that regenesisising doesn't happen next gen.

Well the greatest gen is always going to be the one you grew up in as it always inspires the most nostalgia.

I kind of missed the 16-bit generation. I grew up during that gen, but didn't know anyone that owned a SNES...hell I only knew of one person that even owned the Genesis and they happened to be the poorest family around. We'd do fun things like, steal from the gas station, raid their garbages at night for their family, get in line for inexpensive items to buy food stamps with so their parents could pay for their nasty habits the money left. I tried eating there once, and decided I didn't want to scoop the cockroaches out of the peanut butter. So, once my family was a bit more accomplished, the 64 was already facing it's middle age - yet still, the 16-bit games are magical. I may have been introduced when I was 16, but damn, A Link to the Past, Mario RPG, fan-subbed Tales of Phantasia, Ys IV, Donkey Kong Country, Street Fighter, so many good games. It's taken how long for 3D games to get great, and now most are polished turds? It takes 400+ people to make Halo 4?

No, I think I'll take my SNES with a side of Xbox 1 (you know the first one..one) and a taste of Halo 2 multiplayer. But hey, on the plus side, we're getting Halo 3 FREE next month!!!

I've a twinkle in my eye for the Superfamicom still, brought one in my early 20's, everything from Capcom and Konami back then was pure gold, importing back then was pretty expensive but well worth it, the SFC for me was the pinnacle of the 2D genre, its games are more pleasing to the eye than anything on the PS1 which just looks like a pixelated soup to me these days.

Rallysport Challenge 2 is another game that had it all, I feel nothing this gen has come close to matching, the massive draw distance, butter smooth frame rate and an insane sense of speed, brilliant online too in the early days of Live with a great community, Peugeot 405 T16...nuff said

For me playstation 1, its the console I played tomb raider 123,, resident evil 123, final fantasy 789, command and conquer/red alert, Xcom, doom, gran turismo, wipeout and JRPGs for the first time.

Hell of a combo IMO, but I agree watered down a bit if you had a PC previously. Anyway it blew my socks off.

Utter bullshit. The 80's is the greatest generation. Ok it's the one I grew up in (and it's also more of a decade than a generation) but it is widely judged by scholars to have been the best. Actual evidence:

    1. Marathon Man
    2. Kramer vs Kramer
    3. Hook
    4. Outbreak
    5. SNES
    6. Virtual Boy
    7. TBC
    8. Loon Pants

    The defence rests.
