So storm in a tea cup media frenzy or real problem with our society mocking the mentally ill?

Seems like a fairly harmless Halloween costume to me that just happened to be spotted on a slow news day.

The media must be gutted that they missed out on a 'Superhero viciously attacking the mentally ill' story when Arkham Asylum was released a few years back.

I think as a stand-alone case it is hard to see the harm, but it is a symptom of a wider issue that is very serious.

It's a bit like the Robinson's Gollywog or something. Not really that harmful in itself, but representative of a wider problem.

The only problem is the naming of them, should have just called them 'scary costume' and it would have been fine.

It's not really offensive, though, is it? Isn't it just a copyright-free Michael Mayers thing?

Usual political correctness gone mad guff.

As a side note, we as a people need to stop using gate as a suffix to controversy, unless it's Frontgate or Backgate.

I don't think this case has gathered enough momentum/outrage to justify a "gate" suffix.

Asda is apparently donating 25k to a mental health charity to say sorry.

I'm getting really bored of people on Twitter going after and attacking anything they deem offensive. This is CLEARLY a horror movie trope made into a costume. How people can't see this is beyond me.

I do agree, to an extent. There are a large group of gimps on twitter just sat, waiting to be offended, ready to spring into action.

Everyone who has ever even considered having a Twitter account should be round up and shot.

    Called it

Did they actually call it a "mental patient fancy dress costume"? If so, then that was a pretty stupid thing to call it.

Can we revise that to "anyone who actively uses one"? I have an account, but that's more just to look what football and basketball journalists are saying. That's OK right?

Although if we enforced that I'd have nothing to look at

Ooh, have we reached Gategate? Excellent. That whole suffix has got to end. If the hotel in question had been the Dorchester, would we be using Mentalchester now?

This is what the Asda one looked like btw: http://s21.postimg.org/ofedz2siu/Screenshot_3.jpg[/img]

    (click for bigger pic)

I was wallowing in twitter for the first time in ages last night and saw this bubble up and spew everywhere. Considered agitating it onto here, or Facebook but then just thought "meh". Was just a daft error in judgement.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

I hate the abuse of the -gate suffix. Can we call it mongoloid publicgate every time the media generates outrage over something trivial that has absolutely nothing to do with one of the biggest political scandals of the twentieth century?

What was the first "gate" (other than Watergate of course). Was it the Fergie toe-sucking thing?

The most offensive thing about all this is having to see Alastair Campbell's smug face yet again as he pretends to be outraged by this event that has conveniently happened around the same time that he has memoirs to plug.

I'll never get my Orc looking the same again.

Looking at the list, it seems britain are leading the world at suffixing the word 'gate' to things with gay abandon.
