For me, it's Schindler's List and Forrest Gump.

Citizen Kane stands out for me. Just never seem to have ever been around when it's been on. Oh and ET. Never seen it. Don't really care if I do though really. I think I have missed the boat on that one and you probably had to see it when it was newish.

Can't be bothered to name specific films, but film critics go on endlessly about French movies from the late 50's to early 70's, and I haven't seen any of them, apart from Battle of Algiers which was great :D I need some suggestions!

I would never watch a film because someone else says it's great. I'll make up my own mind about something like that. A lot of so called great/classic films turn out to be awful.

Like Citizen Kane, it was groundbreaking at the time, but I can see how it might be underwhelming. And the children are so cute I could stab them.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

Must admit, I was pretty disappointed with Citizen Kane. Recorded it off the telly when they showed it a month or two back. I guess it's the only film I've seen from the 40s which isn't noir, but I found that no excuse for how slow it was. Granted, it does lots of things well that hadn't been done before and weren't done after for a good few years, but conceptually it didn't all hang together for me.

In it's favour, it does feel like a much later film than it's 1941 release date would suggest, just not like a particularly good later film.

Edit: Although Casablanca isn't noir. Also 1940's, and rather good.

@sajasanman No. Don't trouble yourself to imagine how it was to see such films when they were first made as they delivered the audience something that utterly engaged and captivated their hearts & minds.

I don't see why it's not valid for criticising it for not appealing to ones current tastes, when so many older films still manage to be entertaining.

The Three Colours trilogy. I'd rather watch the Star Wars prequels.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

I think I'm one of the few people to have enjoyed White. Blue's watchable too, just Red's a bit poo.

Of films previously mentioned, I've not seen:
Forrest Gump (can't be doing with Tom Hanks these days)
    Shindler's List
    Any of the Godfather films
Any of the LOR films, apart from the first one which I thought was arse
    Ghandi
Quite a few of the rest that I neither intend ever to watch, nor especially avoid.

Apparently so. Needn't have written such a defensive post, apparently.

Of that list, I'd say you're not missing much, except for Goodfellas. Raging Bull may also be a good film, but I bought it on VHS a good few years ago now, and it doesn't have any subtitles - I couldn't understand a word of it.
