In early September I'm off to the States for a full month with the missus.

Hopefully I'll get to take a bucketload of pictures, and while storage isn't an issue, I'm a bit worried that the SD Cards will get lost, nicked or otherwise die a death while we're away.

I've considered bringing a SD-reader to upload my shots to the cloud, but that requires that we bring a laptop (and the availability of high-speed interweb).

Am I just being paranoid, or do you do anything special to keep your shots safe while away on longer vacations?

I've not been on holiday since the rise of the likes of Dropbox, but we've always seemed to manage OK :)

I just keep my SD cards in my wallet when away.

In my experience hotel internet is usually throttled against uploading and downloading so I doubt that is an option.

I've copied photos to our laptop / netbook in the past but usually I just try and keep my camera on me at all times or in the hotel safe.

You'll be fine, just keep your full cards with your passport/travel docs/house keys etc. so you know where they are. SD cards are pretty resilient in my experience, doubt anything will go physically wrong with them.

When I spent a few months travelling I used a small HD that could be plugged direct into the camera so I could clear my cards. Worked nicely, only pain was having to find somewhere to charge it every few weeks.

In the US the odds of your SD cards failing are lower than getting shot, so if they do fail consider yourself lucky.

If you have a smartphone, you can probably connect your camera to it to copy the photos, and then use the smartphone's cloud connectivity to upload them.

Just get drop box on your phone and it'll auto upload your pics. If you're using a proper camera then just take a card reader too.

You won't find it difficult to find free WiFi hotspots in the states. Failing that there'll be loads of net cafes.

Cheers - think I'll just get a bunch of cards and keep them on me at all times.

Incidentally, this is my 24.000th post.
