    40 a year.
I know people who are already signed up are happy with the "free" games and most people on this site have been happily getting shafted by xbox live for years but I still think this is bad news. PC and PS3 have already shown us that online gaming does not need a compulsory cost, the basics could be free and they could offer the free games and other extras for those who are willing to pay for it.

    Don't pay for it then.

This is shit. They are giving you something for your money with Plus games (and waiting to see news on the BC solution) but taking basic services away from none subbed users is shit.

I guess this is one of the reasons they made it cheaper.

They're not restricting other online features behind PS+, as XBL does.

I don't mind as I pay for PS+ anyway, but I can see how it' annoying.

Well, they could probably make the console 40 more expensive and offer online gaming without the compulsory cost, but there are people who only want to play single-player or local coop so it's not purely a sneaky way to make the PS4 more expensive.

I might buy PS+ before I get the console (probably in a year or so). That way I'll be collecting up all the free games on the way ready to play. :)

(and only really spend the equivalent of a game or two anyway)

40 per month more expensive though. Ongoing is the key.

I've been a sub since day one. I can understand peoples dilemma but believe me, it's an amazing deal. I can't keep up with the amount of games they are giving away and there's 4 or 5 more this week.

Keep your eyes out guys. The price usually drops to around 30 for a year around September time for a limited time (seems to happen every year when mine is due for renewal!).

30 isn't too painful and if you already have a PS3 then you can get the benefits now then carry over the sub on to the PS4.

Per year, surely? Whilst this will cost more over the lifetime of the console, it's not a vast amount. The issue of how much more expensive they'd have to make it now to accommodate free multiplayer is complicated by the fact that even disregarding inflation you'd prefer money up front to less certain money in the future (ie, most people would prefer 50 today than 100 in 10 years time). The 40 figure is just a rough estimate.

It's still incredible value for money considering what they are giving you. MS by comparison gives you ziltch.
They might have killed Forza 5 with this as well. A lot of people will subscribe and, if I understand correctly, you get Drive Club for free when you do. That makes F5 a really really expensive game.

Although should be noted that MS are now giving games away for gold, so the only difference is access to "premium" apps like netflix (which I can still see being tied to ps+ in the future.)

The big but, of course, is that the "headline" two games MS are giving away first are very old, and everybody already has them. Really great games of course, but nowhere near the "generousity" of Sony

I can see its an issue if you already have used the free online service all this time. As a 360 refugee coming into the fold, however I have paid gold for some time now, it will not be an issue.

It really is very cheap for an entire year.

How does that work? I've got a PS+ subscription here, but I've only got the best Sony console at the moment (a region-free PS2). If I add Plus games to my account on my PC, will they still be available when I pick up a Vita/PS3/PS4? Are they on my account for good? :o

Yes, well as long as you subscribe to Plus anyway.

EDIT: FUCK DEMON'S SOULS WAS IN APRIL!

    @PenguinJim
Yes, add them now and they will be available for PS3 and Vita for as long as you keep the PS+ subscription. PS4 though, it's another story. Who knows if they will allow us to play our digital purchases through cloud.

There's still a lot to find out about this. Like, is Gaikai part of the deal?

Just out of curiosity, who here actually plays that much online? I usually play it for a bit on certain games, then never touch it again anyway...

This is something Xbox Live have been doing for 10 years. It has not done harm to people who buy and play Xbox any harm. And that's without free games and discounts. This was always inevitable since PS Plus was implemented.

It's still a great deal. If you don't like, don't pay. Simple. You still have the Wii U and PC has options.

All of the positive stuff on show last night, especially the middle finger to DRM and the plans to kill pre-owned, yet people still find something to complain about.

    Sad.

It's 30 quid a year... I spend more than that going to the cinema with my missus.

I think it's fair enough. Reliable servers plus maintenance isn't cheap. If it means cross game chat and less server issues, then surely it's a small price to pay really. I'm surprised they maintained the free model for so long.

If you can read this, you don't need glasses.

As long as PS+ continues to be good then this really isn't a big deal. I wonder if Microsoft will do a similar thing for the onesie? They've just started copying ps+ for the 360 after all...

You have to consider that this makes a lot of sense.

Now if you buy a used game you need to purchase a network pass to play online.

Instead of paying for multiple network passes, you simply pay a flat PSN fee that is not only cheaper over the year but also gives you a lot of free stuff.

Frankly, it is a brilliant business and gaming decision.

Sony can pay for the infrastructure to provide an online service and the gamer has less faffing about when gaming or doubts when buying a used game where the code might have been used.

Therefore even if there wasn't free stuff, it still makes sense.
