After performing the remarkable feat of making the online worse with MK7 than the already inept Wii version, one would hope they've put some effort into that side and not just taken the MK7 template and bolted on some Miiverse integration.

How was the online worse in Mario Kart 7? I have to admit it has been a good while since I'm played Mario Kart Wii, so I can't really remember much about it. The 3DS one certainly seems okay to me though. Pop into friends games, have races with custom rule sets and custom karts all keep it feeling fresh.

How was Mario Kart Wii better? The only major difference I can remember is Bikes.

I think the online is fine for Mario Kart 7. The only thing it's lacking is voice chat, which would only be worthwhile for community races with mates.

Never really had an issue with MK7 online.

Re: posts earlier about removing items optionally (as per others in the series), I think it would be nice to effectively do multiplayer time trial, as if coins remain on the track, it means whoever gets the first corner down often picks up the coins and stays faster throughout.

The communities were a good idea, implemented in a typically inept manner. There's no queue so if you want to join a community race and it's either in progress or full, you get dumped into a new room on your own.

There's still no way to change a kart or character without quitting.

No way to send ghosts to friends any more.

Yes, you can customise community rules to an extent, but you can't pick and choose the items that are available.

The Wii version had Team Vs, which was great fun. That's been dumped completely when all it needed was a slight tweaking so you could pick teams instead of it being random, resulting in many one sided races.

No way to vote for the type of track (50, 100, 150 or Mirror).

No way to create themed races, e.g. all light characters\vehicles. This is something they should add for the U version if they fuck up the bikes again. Should be able to join all kart, all bike or mixed rooms.

Voice chat. Unlikely ever to happen, coming from Nintendo.

I could go on but it's fair to say there's considerable scope for improvement.

I like the idea of the 20 seconds replay clips. Should be good fun watching the previous race highlights instead of staring at a spinning globe between races.

The blue shell should still be there. Not the Wii bluey which was too destructive but like the one in MK7.

Nintendo will never, and should never, get rid of the blue shell. In fact, it is probably the game's most important feature.

I see people moan on and on on forums about the blue shell and yet 30m people bought the last Mario Kart. And I realised that geeks on forums don't like the blue shell because occasionally it means the best player (i.e. the one who has most time to practice) doesn't win.

And adolescent boys don't like losing. Especially not to their little sisters/uncles/brothers etc.

But that is part of what makes Mario Kart such a fun game to play with a variety of people. You never know what is going to happen, everyone usually has a chance of winning the game, and it is great fun.

And, at the end of the day, it's all about fun.

It's only there to win a element of randomness. Besides how often is it actually helpful to the person who uses it?

I still argue that the person leading the race has the biggest advantage as they would otherwise only have to defend themselves against the opponent in 2nd place, who in turn has to balance defence against 3rd place and offence against the race leader.

All too often, people who storm out into the lead think they're immediately a much better player than those caught in the carnage. It's a very misleading game in that respect and as a result brings out both bitterness and a sense of injustice when a comfortable win is snatched from your grasp.

If I was in 8th place I'd much rather have the Golden Mushroom, Lightning Bolt or the Giant bullet. Blue shell would be useless to me for catching up with rest of the pack, Since it only guarantees to fuck over the player in first place.

I don't actually mind the blue shell, and like the idea of it as a random game-leveller, ie. no matter how far in front you are, something will always be able to hurt you.

If you wanted a game that was always "fair" you wouldn't be playing Mario Kart. Or you'd do time trials.

All this being said, there probably should be an option to turn it off if you want to.

Lightning Bolt is exactly that, It affects everyone and wears off in a descending order, so it closes the gap between the Racers. It also lets the person using catch up.

I really liked the blue shell in MK64, in that it would hit people on the way to first place if they happened to be in its path.

    @jimlufc totally wrong.

They need to replace it with weapons that allow a fairer balance. On single player especially it ruins the game at higher difficulty settings, and it turns multiplayer into random chaos.

Sure we don't want the most practiced player zooming into the distance, but the constant case of going from first to 6th in the last ten seconds of the race is beyond frustrating, and way too big a price to pay for evening up the middle.

I actually liked MK64 the most.

But, again, it's the randomness that makes Mario Kart for me. Even if the most practiced player loses out to a blue shell in a race, he'll still probably win most of the time.

I have friends who cannot stand that, much in the same way that they hate losing at, say, Mario Party because of horrible bad luck. But I like it all the same.

@Mola_Ram not on Mario kart Wii. I raced two people with almost no MK experience (I've played SNES, gba, GC, DS and Wii versions), and every race where I got in front I would be hit by a barrage of blue and red shells that meant I could rarely finish above fourth.

Well, hold some bananas behind you to defend against the reds. Or hang back and get some blue shells yourself :D

I dunno. I do see why the item bothers some people, but it's not something that's ever really concerned me. But as I said I do think that people should have the option of removing items they don't like.
  • Deleted user 22 June 2013 15:59:42
Wihtout the blue shell, even if you are racing 1st place, as soon as they have a banana streak or lucky enough to get a 3 red shells, its impossible to get past. If they can sort that out to some degree, then perhaps the blue shell isn't needed.

So in that regard its quite important. I quite like the bomb dump, so anyone caught in the explosion gets taken out too.

@Mola_Ram what's the point in a racing game where you have to drive slowly? Bananas don't stop the blue shell, and in single player I find any blue shell is followed by an unavoidable red shell that knocks you into a ditch...

I don't think Mario Kart is really a racing game in that respect. If you want a racing game, buy a racing sim. It's great to win a race, sure, but griefing opponents is just as satisfying. Bring on the chaos.

It's subversive. And that's a really nifty thing for a racer to be -- one of the best things they can aspire to. They simultaneous desire to go fast and slow at the same time is a form of tension that only the best racers can manage to drive their players to.

Long live the blue shell! It's especially satisfying to nail somebody who whines about blue shells with one! +D

They could do with making the star more useful again though. Its gotten steadily less effective since the original where it was second only to the red shell in how lethal it could be.

The blue shell in MK7 works similarly to the one in MK64 which helps make it less of an irritating item. Though I think if they just add an Item Switch like Super Smash Bros' everybody would be happy! And maybe then have a "Ranked" online mode without some weapons like the blue shell and a "Party/ Unranked" online mode with all items on.

Personally, I'm not fussed, but I can see why the hate is there.
