So if they were to remove blue shells from Mario Kart, how do you resolve the issue of only having one opponent to worry about when leading a race. A lot of folk think it's all skill when they're winning, but if you get in front early on, you're normally in contention the whole race. If you get a poor or unlucky start, you're going to be battling with opponents all the time, from both sides.

@Raiko101 well a revamped weapon system would either fix the issues or replace it with a fairer system.

    There are two issues there:

    1. Two much mayhem for those not at the front
    2. The unavoidable nature of the blue shell punishing being in front unfairly harshly

For me a better system of catch up power ups is preferential to a system of stopping leaders.

I want the courses to blow me away, I want there to be a huge spectacle!

Sonic Transformed really opened my eyes to what a karting game can be, Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart Wii feel unambitious in comparison. I really hope we don't get another Double Dash/DS/Wii/7 re-skin, they're fun and everything, but I want Nintendo to move on now.

@ResidentKnievel I thought the tracks in that game looked good, but the layouts were dull. The visuals were cluttered at times. I get what you mean though. The do need to try something else though.

@RobTheBuilder I was going to say those changes would be quite drastic, but it's probably what the series needs. There's just a bigger risk that the game will be unbalanced and I can imagine they'll play it safe if they're wanting to release it this year.

@Raiko101 They don't have to be as drastic as you might think. Keep blue shell but make it avoidable with reverse shells/circling shells as with other weapons. Increase the impact of speed ups such as bullets/stars to keep those in the middle moving forwards once hit.

Can't say i'm overly excited about this one. It looks alright, but with the DS, Wii and 3DS versions all being so similar, I was hoping for something a little different, rather than another gimmick. Here's hoping they've got more to say about it before it's release.

It's the only game that I thought looked awesome in the lineup. Can't wait for it.

Inevitably i'll end up getting it. Hopefully they'll do something interesting with the online play.

Didn't look as soul-less as MK Wii did to me. Looked more like MK7.

I do hope they can bring themselves to bring more than 16 retro tracks this time round. It was ace on the GBA version where you got all the SNES tracks, and it was pretty good on the DS, but in MK7 there's always that shitty Wii track some fucker online selects. With each subsequent version, the odds of having a favourite older track in there diminishes.

This looked great to me, easily the best thing in the presentation apart from X.

There's an extended trailer on the eShop at the moment. Worth checking out. Shows off some of the 3DS courses that are going to be in the game! Here's hoping, via DLC or something, that we could possibly get all the retro Mario Kart tracks!

I'm fairly optimistic that it will be a return to form after the humdrum Wii version. The anti grav stuff may change things up in fairly unexpected ways. I noticed that many of the games shown in ND use changing perspective or tracking camera. Anyway, lets hope for the best.

The one thing that I'm really hoping for is that they keep with the minimalist approach to items. I think MK Wii was quite over the top with items and less of them made MK7 play a lot better.

Actually that does look very very good. The extra texture capability/ram over 360/ps3 really shines through, good lighting too.

i think it helps my expectations were a tarted up MK7. It looks like it could be a HD MK that i imagined in my head.

I didn't see one blue shell in the above vid :D

The fireflower looks nice, plus it's 12 karts per race now.

That might help with the leader situation, back markers getting in the way of first, creating more mix up upfront without the blunt fist of the blue shell.

If anyone can find a 1080p feed, it's recommended.
In fact, I think the EShop has some very good videos up right now.
  • Deleted user 12 June 2013 12:21:43
is the game going to be 1080p/60fps?

Maybe Im old but Id much prefer to have seen an 'old skool' Mario Kart, its possibly the only game series where I dont want to see new ideas, I want normal Karts, racing round normal tracks, this anti gravity stuff isnt my cup of tea. IMO MK DS was the best MK ever made, with a great mix of retro and new courses, and no gimmicks.

And I suspect Nintendo will be flogging tracks as DLC for this one, I dont have a problem with that if they release some classics as DLC I'll bite, bit wary though since buying those rubbish 'rush mode' courses or whatever they were for NSMB 2, they were not worth the money

I totally agree, after watching Nintendo Direct via a video stream and then watching the videos again via the eShop; the games looked completely different.

    60fps confirmed
1080 not, I guess not but you never know.
AFAIK Wind Waker and Smash are the only confirmed 1080p/60fps titles.
All the Wii U stuff at E3 including the Platinum Games stuff is 60fps.
