    Red Dead Redemption.

I shouldn't have to explain why, it's just one of the most achingly painful endings to a video game ever and I love how the final section as Jack is where the game really gets it's name from as you set out to redeem the death of your father as viciously as you like. Giving you the option of killing the wife of Ross is in my opinion one of the darkest video game choices ever, but I'm sure we all did it...

    End of fucking thread.
I need to get round to playing this, just so that I can see what all the fuss is about with the ending. I suppose I can just youtube it, but it wouldn't be the same.
A YouTube of this one would be completely pointless as, without spoiling it, it's not that the ending is some sort of huge spectacle (though some of the scenes are quite impressive). It derives all of its weight from the hours you've spent traversing the castle with yorda* before the climax. You should check it out though, it's not very long to play through.

*this may not be her name. I can't remember.
Yeah, that's exactly why I thought watching a video would be pointless.

I would play it, but I've only got the PS2 version, which has a bad resolution even by PS2 standards. Can only imagine how bad it will look on an HDTV.

Also possibly the only open world game to get around the problem of you knowing beforehand that the ending's not gonna change much because you know that you'll be allowed to continue freeroaming anyway (not much of a spoiler, actually).

Still, Portal 2 for me as well.

Secret of Mana. Not even sure how great it is comparitavely, but it was the first game I got really into and so the ending seemed really bittersweet.

But apart from that RDR too probably.

I can't even pick a Game Best Ending per system in most cases. Although Ace on Spectrum is still an all time classic ending Flashing screen, You are Ace! If memory serves

This generation I probably narrow it to Valkyria Chronicles, Journey or the Last Guardian is probably going to be an automatic.

I too think the ending of a game that hasn't come out (and probably never will) is the best ever.

All the eurogamers who actually play with each other on xbl rather than just post pseudointellectual pc handwringing bollocks on the forums, love the shit out of biggy.

Still nowhere near as awesome as ME1's ending.
I would go with ME1 as well. The last mission is properly epic. The last boss fight bit not so much but from a story perspective it's all great. I think it's the best building to a climax game where it all pays off for me by far.

I remember thinking the ending of Link's Awakening on the Gameboy was pretty impressive at the time.
Yeah, that was great. Really powerful and emotional too; very impressive stuff for the hardware.

I will second a lot of those mentioned, such as Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Journey. I'd also like to add Flower, Super Metroid, Halo, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Vagrant Story into the mix.

A couple of people mentioned Limbo. It's been a couple of years since I played it, but do you find the girl, picking flowers or something, she looks up and then it cuts out?

The Darkness was a pretty damn good ending, shame the game's dated quite badly.

Super Mario Bros 2. Nothing beats Mario in bed asleep dreaming and snoring. Can remember calling my parents in to look at the graphics. Fond memories.

A game should just finish with a black screen and 'Fin'.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

It's easy to forget because it hasn't obviously been resolved for however many years. But it really resonated with me.
