Re: Thread title- I see this statement or derivatives of this statement in the comments section a lot recently. Is anyone able to explain to me what it means?

There's a lot of posturing at the moment to be seen as a 'HARDCORE GAMER!' who only cares about GAMES, OLD SCHOOL DISK GAMES and anyone who can see past this viewpoint is seen as a bit of a sellout.

Is the thread title said because Microsoft offer a wealth of non-disk based game features?

I find it's most frequently used as a desperate cry for attention from those with nothing better to do with their day.

    Hope that helps.

I like Window's new logo. It's modern, but traditional. I don't think you can argue that it's not a good direction for them to take with it.

No, it's because Microsoft offer utter shit like Kinect and £50 on demand games - Sony is equally as guilty.

Console gaming in general is more aimed towards the mainstream. Is this a bad thing, that more people will be involved in gaming? No. Is it a bad thing that the mainstream are interested in the kind of games that I really, really do not like? Yes.

It hasn't stopped excellent games coming out on the system, luckily, but it still makes me nervous for the 720.

    Get bent.

I don't like not being able to sell my games so if Microsoft is going there I don't like it. I do like their rebranding though.

@GuiltySpark - You don't have to buy Kinect or Move or £50 Live/PSN games though. The last generation was so immense because it brought the mainstream to gaming. I sometimes wonder if people just want to play the same Sega/Nintendo games from 1993 over and over again.

Can you tell me what you consider the 'excellent' games on the 360 were? It seems when you ask people this they come up with Japanese Fighting Robot games etc

I'm playing Red Dead - Undead Nightmare at the moment. So that, I guess.

I don't have to buy Kinect, but if Kinect becomes the focus for the 720 then it'll dilute the kind of games that I want to play. Which is bad, for me, obviously.

I'm more of a PC gamer now to be honest, probably because of this.

And I don't have to buy stupidly priced Xbox download games, but they aren't giving me a choice. It may as well not be there at all. They're miles behind the PC in those terms.

Meh, Red Dead was pretty weak- played 5 minutes and switched it off. I'm not a cowboys person.

I wouldn't panic about Kinect being a focus until it is announced as such. You might even enjoy it anyway, who knows.

There are loads of great games on the 360. I'd say there's at least a handful that would appeal to most tastes - even more niche tastes. There's even a couple of passable RTS games.

But, with the probable inclusion of Kinect and a load of memory allocated to (provably) non gaming functions  it does look like the next xbox is aimed slightly less at traditional gamers and more of at a wider audience. Personally, I think this will be to microsoft's detriment but we'll see.

Early signs indicate that the PS4 will be a more gamimg focused machine. Nothing to go an internet rage about.

I hope they both include measures to.stop second hand sales. Second hand sales are largely responsible for all the shit most gamers seem to complain about like season passes, exclusive DLC, micro transactions and all that shit

The 360 direction made me go PC again after the initial 360 direction converted me from PC.

Who buys games secondhand anyway? It involves going into a grubby shop and paying five quid less than RRP.

Games drop in price so fucking quick nowadays, it's pretty awesome actually.

@bumyoghurt If it's anything like me, it's the focus on non gaming media and services.

Since I bought my 360 years ago I've drifted mor end more to PC gaming because I now live with my girlfriend and can't justify taking up the TV in the living room for hours at a time. My PC does everything the Xbox an do but does it better and has more functionality.

I don't act all butthurt about it and don't feel like Microsoft owe it to me to configure their business to my needs, but home consoles just aren't relevant to me anymore. Certainly not as content delivery systems either.

    @GuiltySpark

True, I used to be an early adopter, and I still am to a degree when there is something really shiny, but mostly I just wait a couple of weeks and get games at severely reduced prices. It also means i've been able to cherry pick the best titles after reading a bit about what 'honest' folk, like those at EG, think of them.

The one towards unique innovative gaming (summer of arcade with Geo Wars 2, Braid etc) and the Indie channel, to the one post-kinect, indie and almost XBLA death, compared with the surge of awesomeness from the PC indie scene they completely failed to take advantage of.

I think Kinect will be A focus rather than THE focus. There are going to be lots of facets for Microsoft to focus on that exist outside the remit of gaming too.

Games are a given, that will happen. It's just you will have some guys making motion related games for the younger generations and families. On the side you will have people making apps like Netflix and whatnot.

So the direction is more about offering you what you have now, plus a whole load more.

There are plenty of mainstream casual games that are well made, from angry birds to bejewelled to plants vs zombies to the sims to Mario right the way up to FIFA and CoD.

However there's a certain type of casual game, the result of a focus group coming up with the most 'friendly' least inspiring art style imaginable, combined with woeful production values and gimmicky controls, that aren't good for the industry. Nintendo went there and are back pedalling, Sony dipped their toe in the water but couldn't quite pull it off, meanwhile Microsoft look to be pursuing it full force, alongside their secondary goal of turning the 360 into an advert delivery platform.

These games are pulling funding and talent away from more worthy titles, and they pull casual players in short term while alienating them and putting them off when they realise how bad the games are. People who aren't heavy or experienced gamers aren't automatically idiots, and it would be much better for the industry as a whole to draw them in with better quality content so they might stick around for longer and not buy one or two rubbish casual games then leave their console gathering dust in the corner. Mobile games are doing it so much better, with easy to pick up non threatening games that are actually fun to play at the same time.

Im starting to think PC might suit me better for similar reasons and I agree, no need to take it personally (like some seem to) that consoles are changing their focus

There are more great games already in existence than I'll ever have enough time to play in my life time so I dont realyy care if the next xbox is exclusively kinect casual shovelware (which it won't be any way) .

Do we really want our home consoles being platforms for Indie games though?

I see people's point about PCs being more relevant for games, but I have the opposite issue- I don't want a PC cluttering up a room in my house but I will always have a TV and some kind of 'box' underneath it. I embrace the shift to media centre based systems, as I don't have to get a Sky box or HDD player or anything, I can use my games console to stream all my content, both legally and illegally.

So we even have those on EG? The only ones I really take notice of are the Nintendo fanboys, who are completely delusional for some reason.

That's fair enough, but just know that you're compromising.

Though to be honest I have 360/PS3/PC/Wii U/Vita/3DS/iPhone 5 all within about 4 metres of me, so I don't really think I can be impartial : )
