    At first it was:
    Nintendo - N64, 32 million units sold
Sega - Saturn, 10 million units sold
Sony - Playstation, 100 million units sold
Sega - Dreamcast, 10 million units sold

But Sega was put out of commission by Sony. Sega is no longer a player in that field. Their market place was taken. Then it was:

Nintendo - Gamecube, 21 million units sold
Microsoft - Xbox, 24 million units sold
Sony - Playstation 2, 170 million units sold

But Nintendo and Microsoft found that the next-gen console market belonged to Sony now. Both attempts failed pretty badly. Next generation, Nintendo decides to get out of the next-gen console market, and enter the casual gaming market. A new market created.

    Next gen console war:
    Playstation 2 - 70 million
    Playstation 3 - 77 million
    Xbox 2 - 76 million

So Sony outsells Microsoft 2:1, when you factor in the Playstation 2 sales since 2005.

What about the casual gamer and next-gen markets? Then it's:
    Nintendo Wii - 100 million
    Playstation 2 - 70 million
    Playstation 3 - 77 million
    Xbox 2 - 76 million
    Nintendo Wii U - 2 million

Sony has still won this generation. Playstation 2 costs about as much to produce as Wii does at this point. What's happening now though? Nintendo is being driven out of the casual gamer market by Sony's Playstation 3 and 4. Just like Sega was driven out of the next-gen console market by Playstations 1 and 2. Nintendo Wii U is not selling that great - outpaced over 2:1 by Playstation 3. And this is 1 month after launch. Nintendo obviously launched that pre-emptive strike to curtail Playstation 3 profits - but it is a failed effort. There are only 3 Japanese game releases for it, for instance, coming up in the next 90 days. As opposed to 26 for Playstation 3. Developers are flocking away from Wii U - due to its inferior hardware.

I think you meant to post this in another dimension, one where Sony aren't in some serious trouble and where people aren't questioning their future in the games market.

None of the 3 are leaving the market. Sony is in the most trouble but that is not due to the game division, Microsoft are well Microsoft enough said.

While Nintendo don't have other areas to fall back on they did so well with the ds and wii they have the reserves if it really came down to it. It would take at least 2 massive failures before even consider it and then doubtful as you can never count out Nintendo. They have a talent for using concepts that we joke about that ended up changing everything and making money.

You need to clear your numbers up, I suspect there's some serious double counting going on there to make Sony look good. Also, what about attach rate / software sales.

Unit sales don't indicate which console has been the most successful.

For a start, it isn't where the console makers derive their profits.

LB, you really are a massive geek.

At first it was none of them. Thread needs more age perspective. What happened before the NES? You at the back!

Ah, this broken site has mangled my secretary's prestigious e-mail address. No worries, if the posteur original is as smart as he seems, he'll have no problem figuring it out.

I had a grandstand but not a clue who made that. Also I think an Atari 2600 but buggered if I can remember anything else about it I was tiny at the time.

Edit ; aha it was the Binatone Grandstand released 1978, my first console. Released before I was born hehe.

    But what about Spacewar, eh?
It had no competition, so should have dominated the market, but they only made one!

Maybe if it had had a Sony badge on it, it would have sold 70 bazillion.

There's nothing like an imminent console generation change to really bring out the crazies.

For what it's worth, those figures are from IDC... and they're predictions, not actual shipped figures. The reason IDC might not be reliable for predictions:

Or... given how mental your post was, you might want to just carry on posting whatever drifts into your conciousness. Go go go!

What is the point in this thread? Its not informative. It's not even correct. I just...i dont understand what makes a human being want to try and connect with others in such a stupid and weird manner. Is this person suffering from some kind of mental trauma? Does he get off on seeing other people respond to his drivel? If 'Jonathan' has actually sat down and typed this drudge out with the hope of some kind of response i want to know why?

    Oh Ballmer, never change.

But yeah, in the US the 360 is just about to overtake the Wii as the biggest selling console ever, with less than 3 million units between them. The 3DS is by far the most popular handheld right now, worldwide, but sales-wise probably has a long way to go. When this generation closes, though, it'll be Sony in third.

Last generation (PS2/GC/Xbox/DC) was not close at all; this one has been. Previous gen (PSX/Saturn/N64) was a wash, too. Generation before that (MD/SNES) depended on your locale; US and Japan IIRC were heavily SNES, and Europe was the opposite.

The basics of looking to who "won" generational cycles is: stop being such a damn fanboy, because you can succeed and go out.
