Is anyone in the beta?
Pageof 2 First / Last
That popular huh?
Yeah, well, I've requested a beta log-in. I'm not expecting much.
Running around, looking fairly sheepish with the phone pointing at random objects, being spammed with adverts for Burger King, that kinda thing...

Looks like they're starting to build the dataset and test the UI for google glass. Signed up for beta access
Edit: Actually, it doesn't look anything like that at all. Still, signed up

I must be old. I'm not interested in doing Google's legwork for them. Years ago i'd be all over this due to my interest in VR but all i keep seeing is marketing schemes.
Bleh. My younger self would be disappoint.
@nickthegun don't think it's out on iPhone.
Sorry misread your post.

Yup, why are they doing this?
OK, they have a titanic load of cash and are always looking to create "buzz" via one avenue or another.
Ultimately though, they harvesting data and selling more sodding advertising. Can't help but feel a bit cynical too. I'll probably load it up in town for 10 minutes, declare it bobbins and uninstall it. If google are reading this though, I mean't to say I'll totally help you leverage your vertical marketing schnitzel vortex, obviously.

They are doing it to collect data (for free) for a pedestrian navigation system.
Car GPS for people on foot.
So, anyone playing this?
They haven't sent me beta access yet.
Quite enjoying Ingress.
I don't particularly care whether they're using it to harvest data, it's actually quite a fun and tactical capture the flag game and I think it'll be pretty cool when it's out of beta and there are more players.
@infoxicated Where are you playing it? I applied for a beta and haven't got one. I think me being stuck in nowhere Sweden might mean there isn't anything up and running here at all.
@Tonka I asked for one back in November but didn't get it until two weeks ago tomorrow, so it seems kind of random. Being in the middle of nowhere doesn't seem to be a factor - there are lots of folk playing the game with just that problem!
I applied for the Beta on 15 November, and got sent an invite on the 8th December. My home town as 1 portal, and my place of work has one portal. No idea if that's relevant, if they are after capturing more POI stuff then it might be.
Did they just lift the beta? I downloaded the App and got it up and running without anyone asking for a key.
Very confused by the game though. There are quite a few portals that I pass by each day. Do I have to slowly wittle away at them? Bunch of fucking students have all claned up on them and crnked their levels to 5-6.
If you had an activation code emailed to a Google mail account that is linked to your android device, then you dont need to enter it into the Ingress app, your account is already activated.
I downloaded this today, and dont have an invite on any of my google acocunts, and the app asks for an acti code.
...looks really cool though. Hope I get an invite soon.
I've been playing this now for about 18 days, I managed to win an invite off of one of the fansites who were running a competiton to crack codes and clues.
So far, absolutely zero advertising that I have seen, and it has been a lot of fun walking about capturing portals and leveling up. Also met a lot of new people along the way and we now have regular meet-ups to go and knock out enemy portals and have a drink along the way.
All I can imagine that Google is farming out of this is GPS accuracies across devices.

Anyone still play this? The Mrs got me hooked recently and it's good fun
I have it on my phone, but haven't looked at it for a long time. It's a pretty cool idea, but when you're out in the sticks as I am now, the weirdest shit pops up as a target. My local portals are a memorial bench and an evangelical church.

I kind of occasionally hack the odd thing, but I don't play it much.

Tried it, seemed cool, too lazy to deck about with that though
I set up a portal at a pacifier tree (a place where children who stop using their pacifiers hang them).
A year later I saw a guy tearing down the pacifiers with gusto and chucking them on top of a nearby tool shed to hide them.
At the time I thought he was a lunatic but then I started suspecting he was trying to hide the portal by altering its look.
I had a gap on playing this after hitting 8 back in 2013, introduced a guy in the office to it and am now playing again myself. Just got the Platinum guardian badge.

Started playing this recently, it's interesting. My home town is pretty green so it's slow levelling...
I just downloaded this and then went for my usual walk.
There are several portals around. Three of them seemed to be 'empty' - I was able to deploy the full complement of thingys straight away. Wheras, not 500 yds away were some with level 8 thingys that seemed pretty much unaffected by my attacks.
Not entirely sure what I am doing, but I will stick with it for a bit. I did get up to lvl2 already.
Exactly the same landmarks as pokemon go.
It's by the same people - Niantic (sp?).
