Thanks for the advice, I think the 965 is my best bet then. Ive been living off pretty ancient hardware for a number of years so even considering todays standards id imagine the 965 will provide me a boost from my humble perspective. I dont think I can use the X6 which is a shame but considering the price I paid for this old pc I cant really expect that.

    Again thanks for the replies!

The 965 - 980 are all very similar, so if you cant find exactly the 965 dont worry. The initial clock is all that is different between them, they will all overclock to around the same point assuming decent fan.

Expect around 4ghz Overclock, the 965 starts at 3.4ghz and the 980 starts at 3.7ghz.

I did a quick bit of googling and your motherboard is a AM3 board, which means it should take X6 chips.

    Linky , is this yours ? http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/M3A%20UCC/index.asp?cat=

(Just word of warning dont bother with the slow x6 chips. Either go for the faster quads such as 965 or then top hexacores like 1100, for gaming)

I have an i5 3570k, 8gb ram and a 7950, is it worth upgrading anything yet? I only play things at 1080p

    How about from a GTX570 and an i7 950?

To be honest, even if it's a bit early, I'll probably upgrade now, as I'm getting a nice wee lump sum, the likes of which I won't see again for a while. The amount is perfect for a big upgrade.

The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine.

The CPU is still a good CPU. Overclock it if it isn't already and just replace the video card with either a 3 or 4GB card. The 3GB Nvidia cards are still very expensive so maybe consider a Radeon card if you don't mind getting bodied by utterly shit drivers.

The 4GB Nvidia cards like the GTX 770 are overpriced.

    don't buy a 2GB card

Cheers. The CPU is at 4GHz. I don't mind AMD's performance/price, but I do mind their drivers. Thinking of getting a 780/780ti. I suppose it's a "just because I can" upgrade.

At this point I wouldn't spend upwards of 500 quid on a 3GB card. Video memory requirements are going to get ridonkulous in the next few years. Maybe wait and see what the Nvidia 8xx series deliver. The 870 is supposed to offer most of the performance of the 780ti and comes with 4GB of memory and will probably be slightly cheaper.

Interesting. When's the 800 series supposed to be becoming available?

There are rumours it has been delayed 'til 2015.

    Here's a pikey brand 6GB 780

Is there any point in a pc GPU having 6gb VRAM at the moment? I think the only thing I have that I can get to overload the memory in my card (3gb) is x plane

Well if Palit are doing it, hopefully someone else will jump on the bandwagon. 2015 is too long for me. This is mostly because I get impatient when I decide I want something. I bought my 950 about two weeks before Sandy Bridge came out.

Nvidia are struggling with development on 800 series and I say a Q2 2015 release is more than likely now and will tie in with Intels new chip.

If it's that long, I wonder if they'll skip a number (similar to when they went from 200 series to the 400's)

No, there isn't but it's better than dropping 4-500 quid on a card that will stuggle with video RAM shortage in a few years unless you don't mind upgrading again. There are console games right now that are using over 3GB of memory for textures ect. My 670 is already quite a bit faster than the console GPUs but I'm already having to dial back the textures in a few games. Fucking sucks. Playing a PC game that has worse textures than a console game ain't right. :/

I bought a 3GB 280x (7970) but the drivers from AMD at the moment are just shit. Watch Doge is just garbage on AMD.

It says ultra textures need 3GB but the game can't stream in the data fast enough sp it's back down to high, which is worse than PS4.

They just released the 750 and I think Nvidia will just release a few more low-med gfx cards.

Watch Dogs is garbage on everything. I mean PCGamers Pxiel Collider can't even run it 60fps at 1080p.

I had it running pretty sweet on my 670 at high settings at 1600x900. I'm talking about a locked 60fps even driving around. The only time it shat itself was in the opening scene so I dropped the res down a bit further but after that it was very nice. However even then it just irked me that the fuckin' console version was running with better textures (albeit at half the frame rate).

    /rants

See this is why I bought the 280x in the first place. I anticipated that 2GB wasn't going to be enough what with the newer console having a lot more unified memory and to be fair I got the 280x for a pretty good price and the MSI card is just beautiful but...the drivers are just crud.

There is ALWAYS something wrong with playing on AMD. You think you have things sorted and then a new games comes out and it all goes to shit whereas with Nvidia shit just works and the control panel actually works.

right i'm defo gonna shut it now

That was some rant. I might either get a 6GB version of the 780 or just try to discipline myself and wait for the next series on Maxwell. It's not as if my current build doesn't play things well.

Come on Maxwell, I'm bored of my 6xx series and refuse to do a tick-tock upgrade to 7xx.
