I think personally the edit by EG was more to do with the suggestion that the people behind Tomb Raider might bribe people, the personal element of Lauren was just a cover.

EG don't want to lose that ad revenue by making speculative accusations (although it is clear that he said "I'm sure she isn't")

The handling of this whole thing has me annoyed. Everything about it actually, bar the original piece.

The comments are full of tards so everyone else flocks here for safety.

Though reading that it implies that most forumites aren't tards, which clearly isn't true.

Dave Cook and Rab have a chat.

For what it's worth, i DON'T think Dave is corrupt.

Edited by jellyhead at 16:33:03 25-10-2012

    edit:

Dave's PS3 going to Kids Hospital Charity.

The bloke has been caught up in the whole Streisand effect fallout from the Lauren comments and actions.

^ Good on him I suppose. Of course, why would he need to give it away if he felt like he did nothing wrong? Guilty much? >_> At least he didn't threaten to sue.

He gives away a lot of the PR/Review kit he gets apparently.

He said in the comments of the article that he already has a PS3, and he would have given it away as a competition prize on the site.

Most of what's come up doesn't really smack of corruption to me either, just an alarming amount of naivety. Lewis Denby from Beefjack has some thoughts on it that are probably fairly pertinent.

They shouldn't be getting them in the first place, in most other jobs if a company wanted to give you things you'd have to declare them and in most cases turn it down.

I don't think I'm allowed to accept anything more valuable than a pen or perhaps a mug without having quizzical looks made towards me.

Well other than the box of chocs the department may get at Christmas from some suppliers and then we eat the evidence.

@Jelly, ecureuil, fair enough. Psst, Dave if you're reading this, I don't have a ps3 *hint* *hint*.

Eh, don't think that excuses it. In this day and age, if you don't know how to steer clear of obvious acts that might bring your integrity into question, you're not naive, just stupid.

@Nehmis Oh, don't get me wrong, I don't think that excuses it either. I just don't think they (all those who tweeted the offending hashtag) realised at the time that what they were doing was acting as promoters for a game. I'm sure a lot of them feel foolish about what they've done in hindsight, and would have called out others on it had the tables been turned.

The main thing that gets me is the knee-jerk "I did nothing wrong and am beyond criticism!" response that came from a few of the journos - and even that is in some ways understandable. It can be very hard to accept you've done something foolish, worse to have it broadcast to everyone you know and respect.

It's funny how the biggest news story in gaming at the minute isn't on the EG front page as it is about them.

Or they are waiting for Kotaku or VG247 to post it first as per.

Erm, the biggest panel on the front page is for the most popular topic at the time, for now it's this one so EG are hardly hiding the discussion away.

Most private companies would discipline you, it's a conflict of interests.

    You dare to strike Scurrcules!?

Good point, that modified article with absolutely no mention of the ensuing shit storm (or edit) is clearly reporting on the story as a piece of gaming news. Thanks for correcting me

I see what you mean. I was just commenting that the article is prominently on the front page of the site. EG haven't released a statement about it, true.

Its ironic that the game has got tons of PR out of it now.

I don't envy games journalists, it's difficult to keep your integrity when it can result in you becoming penniless.

Lost Humanity was a brilliant column. But like all things that challenge people it was never going to last. Eurogamer should be given credit for letting it go on this long at least, but also a stern glare for the bullshit way it all ended.
