It isn't inhuman to offer work to someone and expect them to wear a uniform.

LB, you really are a massive geek.

Were these women held against their will or something? You'd think so, judging by some of these comments.

You're Right ! We should start a Kickstarter campaign to fund a home for out-of-work Booth Babes...

Or we could just find them some less demeaning work, find out what they're actually good at and treat them as human beings...

[sadly, I cant see the second option catching on...]
What if the thing you're good at is being attractive and making people think you like them?

(kind of off topic but I think this is a valid point. Using the intelligence, motor skills, strength, etc that you are born with to earn money is fine. Use the body you were born with to earn money! Oh noes!)

It is a valid point. Some people, god bless 'em, just don't have many brain cells to rub together but have been blessed with good looks and great bodies. Better to be a booth babe in that situation than do something much worse like porn or prostitution.

All the eurogamers who actually play with each other on xbl rather than just post pseudointellectual pc handwringing bollocks on the forums, love the shit out of biggy.

Guess it doesn't apply to booth babes (though maybe it does), but I did notice this comment on reddit today. Interesting perspective.

A girl I know who often says she got fucked harder in retail than she ever did as a sex worker.

When I went to see Crystal Palace not so long ago, they had the crystal girls prancing around during breaks in play. At the IPL they have scantilly clad cheerleaders. Even Lloyds of London has an attractive girl in every box to reel in the potbellied brokers. Yes booth babes are silly and sexist, but the whole world is at it. That doesn't make it right, and you have to start somewhere, but if people are willing to be booth babes, you'll never stop it shirley?

The "poor girls"/ "it's so demeaning"/ "you can be saved" attitude is utterly fucking repugnant.

I applaud the decision to have them barred from future expos for all sorts of reasons, but nobody needs saving.

What's less demeaning? To view women are helpless delicate flowers who can't make their own decisions, or to view them as objects for tittilation of the masses?

Of course, the answer is neither, and polarising the debate is in itself condescending. They should be in the kitchen.

The interesting thing about this thread is it is almost entirely full of men voicing their opinion on the subject, and some quite clearly think they know what's best for women in general. I would be a lot more interested to hear what the female members of these forums think about booth babes to be honest.

Not that you have any bias on the matter.
Ok so I've finally come up for air after 'researching' that site and venting my outrage all over the laminate flooring. But after holding firm for a while, I can't contain myself, I have to stick my oar in / toss my helmet into the ring... basically come forward and release my conclusion on t'issue:

I think it's fair to label these women as sex objects, because whenever I ask for sex, they object!

Anyway, how else would you get the opportunity to meet: Les Dawson's Daughter!

I saw her at the show and asked what she thought about the job, she said: "I don't do this for a living, oh no. just for the luxuries in life ...like bread and shoes."

I suppose she might have found the whole thing depressing, but at least she put on a brave face.

In any case, they'll need to change tack to draw the punters in next year. My moneys on Russ Abbot's estranged half-sister in Princess Daisy / Peach Lesbo Cosplay.

Is this in response to some of the Youtube videos that have appeared since the event? I've noticed a few specially invited attendees are posting some pretty disgusting and childish videos with Booth Babes.

I think it was more to do with the fact the girls shorts were so tight you could tell what they had for breakfast.

I didn't really want to get involved in this debate, but there just seems to be some misconceptions floating around here. I don't intend to speak on behalf of all women here; just as someone who's witnessed all sorts of ridiculous shit that women have to put up with both in and out of the gaming industry.

Also have removed naughty words but apologies if any have slipped through.

Booth babes are a stupid idea because:

They create an unwelcoming environment to women. By parading around in too-tiny hotpants and skyscraper stilettos and inviting people to photograph their arse you are saying, "Women are fair game; if they're hot or skimpily-dressed, take photos of them without asking! You won't come across as creepy, we promise." I'm horribly reminded of girlfriend revenge sites, or those weird old men at TGS taking upskirts of cosplayers.

They imply that gaming is a male-only hobby. We know this isn't true, although the presence of women has at-best been underexposed until recent years. We're still trying to shake off the "girl gamer" or "sexy nerd" stereotypes that seem to spring up whenever a woman starts to talk about videogames, although I suppose it's better than being asked, "You play games, what like The Sims yeh?"
The idea that the booth babes were aimed at male demographics was stupid. Virgin Gaming offers competitive game tournaments across many titles. Since when has competitive gaming been exclusive to men and boys? I mean, sure XBL seems to be populated with 12-year-old boys most of the time, but really all that means is that they're the most vocal people on the service.
nVidia was the other company I noticed with booth babes and I was a little disappointed in that too. I know they've done it before but really, graphic cards? Ooh, these chips are so sexy RUB YOUR YAMS ALL OVER MY MOTHERBOARD i just don't get it

It is not about the children. I honestly couldn't give a damn what someone's precious ickle Timmy sees. It is the responsibility of the parent to judge whether or not somewhere will be a good environment for that child, and I do not believe seeing a little flesh will harm them. Seeing some legs and boobs is not repulsive because everyone has more or less the same junk under their clothes anyway, and I do not think/know if children would be upset about this in the same way teen/adult women are. I would love to hear what a parent says abut this though, as obviously some children may have seen or heard things that aren't age appropriate.

Companies that use booth babes think you, the male gamer, are an idiot. You are literally so thick, says the company, that you will buy a game based on how sexy the females standing around looking bored are. Obviously you are some sad, lonely neckbeard who has never even seen a women IRL, let alone spoken to one! Maybe if they lean in extra-close you'll get to SMELL them. A REAL GIRL. Not like that dakimakura you have at home. Go on, spring for the 2gb card. You will definitely see some sexy lady parts if you buy that.
Does that not make you feel patronised?
1 - As if female gamers exist.

    2 - See above.

3 - Damn straight but if it, keep them in the 18+ area.

4 - This is funny because the companies that used booth babes were Virgin and nVidia - neither of which promoted any games at the expo. I know the Sony community manager dresses in a somewhat provocative outfit but she is fully dressed, unlike the VM girls.

Also interesting that Virgin Media were the main sponsors for the event so how are Eurogamer going to the address that - by removing them from any association to next year's event?
