With all the football on and wimbledon and the olympics getting closer, the TdF has sort of snuck up on me. It's this weekend already! No wait, tomorrow!?

Sadly I also leave on vacation tomorrow so I will probably not be able to catch any of the first week, except for a summary at the end of the day from some website. :-/

Seems to be quite a lot of time trialling this year.

I'm hoping Jelle Vanendert can surprise in the mountains. He did well in the Giro.
Gilbert hasn't gotten near his formidable performance of last year but that was to be expected. There's a stage early on (3rd or 4th I think) that could be his if he's in shape. Flat with some moleshills at the end and an uphill finish, just like he likes them.

I've not followed the cycling the last weeks. Sagan seems to be in good form but his recent win streak was over in the US I think, not sure who he was up against there.

Looking through the rider list is actually really open, not having Andy and Alberto there really makes it tough :)

I'll be relying on the highlights show in the evening, hopefully a lot of mountain stages will be at the weekend so I can watch most of the coverage for those.

Our son will hopefully be all "I want to watch the 'Men with bikes'" again this year, so we can out vote mummy for what's on the tv.

    ;-)

I'll see if I find time to set myself up for the league. I'm already in one through a Dutch newspaper.

So we all collected points today then : ) Great to see Cancellara back in the spotlight again. Only saw the last 18k, been at work all day, but they were pretty exciting.

HOLY! just checked myself :) looking on it though, i could probably do with one big climber in there, risky going with rolland, mollema and sagan. Unproven on the tour but with loads of potential.

ashame really that martin got a flat on the proluge! could have been better. :)

Shit. Really regretting trying to be different and not taking Sagan now. It was a pretty weird run in, but he rode it perfectly.

start watching and you pick up things pretty quickly. Eurosport do a great job of explaining everything : )

I think this is my third TDF now, first one i watched was when Wiggins was riding for Garmin, and he came fourth. Love cycling from that, TDF (and the other tours) alongside F1 is my anticipated sport of the year now. :)

Just moved house and decided to switch from Sky to Virgin as we're already plumbed in for it, plus fibre optic and that. Install date is the 17th so going to miss pretty much the whole tour. Gutted.

Oh sweet. I think the TV has a freeview tuner in it, better see if I can rustle up an RF cable from somewhere - if they still make them.

Has anyone noticed if the BBC cycling section is still doing the text commentary this year? I used to use it to follow the progress through the day in a work friendly(ish) way.

I think they stopped it last year, and I maybe had to use Eurosport's or the tours own webiste to see the breaks and splits.

I may just have to rely on the tv highlights shows instead this year I guess.

my team could be a man down already

BBC Sport's Matt Slater on Twitter: "Spoke 2 Tony Martin, had 2 b helped 2 start, left wrist in cast. Said he'd see how today goes."

Tony Martin is still going, though when the pace built up for the sprint today, he just let the bunch go.

As for those who kept going it was a hell of a run in. Cavendish showed that even without the HTC, or indeed any leadout to speak of he's still the best sprinter by some distance.
  • Deleted user 2 July 2012 22:21:01
just watched the highlights now, that was some sprint. So fast in the last 10k. I think Cav only had Eddy boss with him, to position himself through those little kinks and the roundabout at that pace without the rest of the team. some sprint.

Absolutely crashtastic so far today. Mostly members of my piss-poor fantasy team.

Usually nervous and hence very crash-prone the first week, isn't it.
Impressive one by Sagan today. Even had time to do a cheeky "Forest Gump" as he went over the finish. :-)
