With PC and consoles specifications increasing exponentially and graphics making most use of this. Which games do you feel have the most advanced AI?

Almost all games have some kind of AI, advanced or otherwise.

The best AI isn't actually AI at all, but waypointed scripting and situational behaviours.

Killzone 2 on the harder difficulties was pretty impressive, there's a few good GDC talks on what they did on the tactical side.

Dwarf Fortress is probably one of the more complex AI laden beasties out there at the moment, isn't it? Or would Creatures still beat it out?

Nine times out of ten you'd be better off fudging, but it's always interesting seeing the effort put in.

Black at one time surprised me when in the final level one enemy soldier I had tried to snipe disappeared...
No problem, I thought, I'll find him later and continued sniping his buddies...
After a few minutes that soldier had managed to circle round and ended up shooting me in the back...
Scared me quite a bit as I had cleared the area and wasn't expecting someone there...

Yeah, I'm sure I read that DF is freakishly advanced in it's AI. Hardly any time is wasted on the visuals, and it's been constantly developed for years.

@Rens11 most advanced in a technical sense or in providing th end result of seeming realistic?

Half-life gets a lot of mentions in these sorts of threads but was actually quite dumb - the soldiers couldnt even move and shoot.

Black and White was good but was really just re-inforcement of actions altering a matrix.

If we're talking about implementation of NPC behaviour in games versus actual AI then often like graphics illusion of reality is the order of the day... many people think Unreal tournament had excelent ai but it was mostly pathing and conditional responses, nothing intelligent about it.

Best AI in a game... Men of War. Play it and you'll see.

Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity. That being said, I thought the AI in FEAR, Naughty Bear, Haunting Ground (dog) and Killzone 2 & 3 were pretty interesting.

Half Life 1 AI was actually not great. There was a lot of scripting combined with level's funnelling you to where you are meant to be. Just turn off wall clipping and observe the AI doing its thing when you emerge from a place you are not meant to be. It does give a good illusion of AI before you peep behind the curtain.

Itís kind of why they were unable to have AI in Half-life 2 of the same quality. They opened up the levels more which meant the same tricks did not work so well.

Would be cool if they unloaded AI to a server somewhere, let a Watson supercomputer think about it and then send back the results.
    Like Siri but for AI.

Halo 3 / Reach has fantastic AI in Heroic or above. Best AI in an FPS I've experienced.

Sports games, FIFA etc also have pretty decent AI.

Generally speaking, games where the AI opponents put up a challenge and make you work for your victories without rubber banding or cheating.

The Halo games have the best enemy AI I've played against. I thought Fear 1's AI was good to.

I didn't really play any video-games at all between Kick Off 2 on the Atari ST back in the 1980s and playing Saints Row II a few years ago.

Playing SRII for the first time, I jumped on a motorbike and my AI companion immediately stole a car to follow me. Being completely new to this 'next generation' gaming, I nearly fell off my seat in amazement at the sophistication of the AI behavior...

I'm trying to imagine how slow a game such as Call of Duty would run if every actor in the game had proper AI.
