Is that a proper edition of Office or some nonsense cut down version? Having a dinky thing that does office and has a proper keyboard might be quite good actually. Absolutely no way I can justify it at that price, but would be tempted if I needed to replace my laptop.
I wouldn't replace a laptop with an RT machine. The Pro version you could though.

The whole point of Surface was for Microsoft to show OEMs how to make an expensive tablet device rather than going for the cheapest possible shonky tech.

Job done... as long as they run Windows 8 RT at a decent rate.

    Is it windows?
    Yes, but RT.
    What's RT?
It's like windows, but it won't run windows programs.
    So it's not windows?
    Not really.
Fcuk it, I'll take one of those ipads over there.

At least if they'd put it into impulse buy territory it might have suckered a few people in.
I can see it being confusing but simply saying think of it as the Windows version of the iPad, has an App store and also comes with Office. That is probably enough for most people. Basic needs, nice device, sold.

I have no doubt it will do reasonable numbers. I'm just bitter that I can't afford to shell out for one. Still there are around 20 tablets hitting the shelves this month, so I still have hopes for a tablet that fits my incredibly limited budget.

They needed to come in at $50 - $100 cheaper than the iPad to have a chance, imo. Hell, even $25 would have been a start.

Nobody's going to buy this for that price.

I'm just interested in the Pro tbh, probably ridiculously overpriced but I don't own a personal laptop at the moment and the possibility of using any number of windows programmes as well as playing a large amount of my more esoteric (read:less demanding) Steam library on the go is mighty appealing.

80 for a keyboard cover on a touch screen tablet?!

Yup, it's a screen protector with a keyboard on it so you can use the thing without having to prod at it like a chimp all the time.

    Options. They're great.

I like that me and my friends can stick the kb and tablet together while flipping through the air. I can see us doing that all the time.

But laptops are shit unless you desperately need to work while traveling or commuting. Not a replacement of what tablets are good at.

So 80 for a screen protector with a keyboard is good value?

It so happens next week I've got a chunky bonus in my pay packet so I'm incredibly tempted by these new windows 8 tablets, that's if they even launch next week in the UK..

Question being, would the Pro version be powerful enough to run games to a console standard? I must admit I haven't a clue with what is current regards PC's but having something like this to play games, use as a typical tablet/ipad and also use productively when the need came, seems ideal.

And tablets can't replace laptops. At least not the android/ios/rt flavours anyway. The problem with Windows RT is the windows bit in the name. Johnny Plebhead the average uninformed consumer is going to see the Windows part and assume it's the same as he's got on his old laptop. Whereas this isn't an issue with Apple because Johnny Plebhead has never used a Mac.

Of course it's not a good value! Just like the price diff. in a 32gb jump in memory is terrible value. These things aren't about value, though.

RE: Keyboard - I wonder what the keys are like - just a small rubber bump? An important factor in the purchase of any kb, imo!

The keys are raised bumps on a rubber mat from the looks of things. Think more responsive, thinner ZX Spectrum keys but without the awesome.

"Type with ease and get stuff done

Some activities call for a keyboard. Surface comes with an integrated Kickstand and a revolutionary, 3mm thin, pressure sensitive cover that doubles as a fully functioning keyboard and trackpad. Your Touch Cover connects to your Surface with a single magnetic click. Now you can chat with friends and respond to emails comfortably."

They say it's revolutionary, so who am I to argue! I'll admit I'm intrigued.

However, I do lament the death of the trackball. I can't stand the effing trackpad... especially for gaming of any sort.

I just hope the touch cover is as good as there hyping it to be. Personally as much as I'm tempted, I think it's more than a little worrying that since the unveiled Surface some 3 months back, nobody has actually had the chance to try one out.

The whole lack of info in general even now seems baffling, I was expecting some surprise low low price point, but if there going to match the ipad (which Itself has only been leaked) I would have expected a little more than a hipster advert a week from launch.

Not that surprising, rumour has it they've only just finished the software, so probably aren't all that sure exactly what it does yet themselves.

Are these even consumner devices? Strikes me that business will get *much* more out of these than anyone else, especially as firms start switching up to Win8 over the end of the year

    479 Euros - 32GB
    579 Euros - 32GB with keyboard
    679 Euros - 64GB with keyboard

I'm guessing the UK is going to screwed.

Given the Miami Vice colour schemes i'd say they were very consumer orientated. Business kit tends to be grey, silver or black.

edit: Our place is just now going over to Windows 7, i doubt many businesses will jump into Windows 8 straight away. There's quite a few still running Windows 2000/XP!

Few companies have shown any interest in moving to W8. Most are still on xp, about to move to 7, and are reluctant to commit to W8 when it is unproven and has questions about its openness and compatibility.
