Watch Dogs announced as new IP from Ubisoft
Yves Guillemot took the stage at Ubisís E3 press event to announce the new IP Watch Dogs, which the third-person shooter in the works at Ubisoft Montreal for the last two years.

It takes place in the summer of 2003, where during a blackout in New York a disgusted employee unleashed a virus on the city.

Because of this, the city is now controlled by a computer controlled by a major corporation. The computer knows all your actions, thoughts, etc and links everything you do to the system. All data is interconnected.

Players can control an entire surveillance system in the game, and use the computer system as a weapon once hacked.

Looked pretty excellent in the conference.

Heres a 720p Video of the demo from youtube:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=lyWJnckBcBQ#!

Is this on next generation hardware? I fail to believe Ubisoft could create an open world game that impressive on current gen consoles...

It might not be open world. Just small, level based assassination areas a la Hitman.

It looks pretty open world when the protagonist is driving away, the YouTube footage doesn't end the same way the presentation does.

I watched the link I gave; and it's a little different to the E3 live demo (No hint at multiplayer), but it does show a few seconds of driving at the end. Why would they even bother with vehicles if the game was linear?
    Edit: Beaten to the punch.

Wow! I don't think I've ever went from knowing nothing to really needing a game. That hack stuff, though possibly gimmicky, looked really well integrated into the game. I really loved the little touches toom like the snippets of people you get (one had HIV - handy to know).

I like the visuals, and I quite liked the music/sound design. If they get the controls right, it really could be special.

I'd kick the living daylights out of the producers of Tipping Point - Ghandi

Wow. A game where you distract the guards and sneak into a building without any of the other 100 people on the street / queuing batting an eyelid.

    That's next gen all right.

Wow. A game in which you approach the bouncer of an art gallery, only to be noticed as a known fugitive. Having had your ass handed to you in a one punch knock-out, you are soon arrested by arriving enforcement officers. Taken to a local police station your Lawyer informs you of your certified guilt with no chance of bail. 3 months later you are convicted, hanging yourself in prison.

    Next gen next gen!

It looks visually impressive but was I really blown away by the gameplay? not yet, I'll have to see more.

The hacking device looks a bit too contrived as well. Unlimited hacking of everything in the city at the touch of a button with one small handheld device? How is that possible? Is it some sort of universal supercomputer, the size of a mobile phone? If this was some sort of stolen top secret government device, or if this was science fiction maybe, but I'm not really buying it, yet.

Maybe if they'd shown a trailer/gameplay about finding different systems/devices to hack different things for different objectives all while trying not to get caught and achieving your goals I'd be a bit more convinced.

Seriously, you're not convinced because you don't like the idea of his hacking device???

And it's clearly not unlimited as every time he uses it it drains the power to his device (battery hud icon in the bottom left corner of the screen).

Very impressive. But it's just another GTA, Assassins Creed, Infamous jobby.

I think it's a multiplayer spy versus spy game. People are out to assassinate you and your job is to blend with the environment and hide within a bunch of NPCs going about their business - while you are out their doing your own mission. I hope it is... and not some GTA kind of sandbox game with a different setting and some hacking powers.

Like I said in the E3 thread this looked amazing until he was handed a gun. I thought you were going to be playing as a investigative reporter dude who used technology as his weapon. Turns out you're just another mass murdering super soldier who is far more of a danger than the people you're after.

This game will be shit. The hacking device will work as a "Open Sesame" solution to all puzzles. After that there will be some coverbased shootings and in game cut scenes.

"Shit fuck. A doorman, whatever should I do?" [HACK HIS MOBILE]
"Shit fuck. I'm lost, whatever should I do?" [HACK THE MAP]
"Shit fuck. A locked door, whatever should I do?" [HACK THE WEB]
"Shit fuck. I need to know what's behind door number three, whatever should I do?" [HACK THE CCTV]

    Color me unimpressed.

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

It's good to see the usual gamer unbridled cynicism applies to everything, even one of the only new games and possibly most promising game announced at E3. RPS mention rumours that it's a long way off so I suspect a fair amount will change, the title being the most likely :)

    Portable view - Never forget.
