I saw that BBC article. It reminded of an article that gained some notoriety in Japan some while back with a similar slant about a guy who was way into foreign first person shooters on the PC at the ripe old age of 78.

I knew this got bumped because of the article, which is great, because that grandma seemed like she would be a riot to hang out with. But I question the logic of the thread-starter. Aren't old people all over the world the most renowned demographic for hand dexterity next to teenage boys? I mean, there are literally dozens of cultures where hand crafted things are fading away and it is the old people who are carrying them with beautiful works well into their 80s and so on. If they can do that, I imagine video games are no problem whatsoever.

I reckon I'm getting better the older I get.

I used to struggle like fuck with things like speedball 2 in league 1 years ago, but I had a go the other day on a 360 controller and pissed it

Reaction speed takes a real hit once you clock past a certain age (mid-twenties for me, I think). You need co-ordination to play as well, but not much - your average five year old can get their shit together well enough to play most games - but to beat other gamers you need experience and/or fast reflexes.

I think the main reason we don't have more really old gamers is that a lot of them can't be arsed to learn a whole new thing that they can't see the point in. Old gamers will be the norm by the time we get there.

Well I agree that older gamers are probably mostly generated from younger gamers getting older, but you don't think say, a person who carved wood sculptures all their life would be able to translate that dexterity to fast-paced games?

I'm sure they could if they really wanted to - but most of them won't want to. You carve a wood sculpture and at the end, you have a wood sculpture and it will probably be around long after you're gone, being handled and admired by great great grandchildren. I can sympathise very much with the 'why bother learning all that new shit?' attitude so prevalent amongst the old. Makes me wonder what I'll be refusing to learn when I'm ancient =)

Im not really finding my reactions are getting slower as I get older. Its just the lag that is getting worse.

I think loss of peripheral vision is the one to look out for actually as you edge towards 40. Could be bad news for COD etc...

I'm 39 on wednesday and cannot run and gun for shit on shooters. Reactions are just not there. I clean up on blops 2 because witrh ther right loadouts u can camp in some great spots with a couple of bouncing bettys as early warning system. That's why I like blops2 as it allows for tactics and its not a headless chicken fest like other cods.

Yeah yeah, like my Dad complaining that his eyesight was fine, they were just printing stuff too small these days =D

In shooters, to regain the edge when you lose your twitch reflex, you just need to know the map and know what people are likely to do. If they're so much as scratched and there's a medipack on the ground, you know they're going to go for it, so just wait for them to start over and aim at the pack. Same deal when Quad damage respawned in q3, just aim where they're going to be and blow the mofos away.

    Also 39 this year.

I thought my reactions had gone on BLOPS 2 as I kept getting beat in one on ones.
Then I switched to sub-machine gun with 'quick draw' and that made a massive difference. Have you already tried that Max?

Yes butby the time I 'register' them I have been shot!

Standoff (with target finder lmg, extended mag, foregrip, 2 bettys flak jacket and tactical mask) can be a shooting gallery as long as u check the windows regularly

    You still get the buzz...

You're 31 for Christ's sake! You're barely out of nappies!

Wait until you're staring 50 in the face, then we'll talk.

    ;o)

Edit - Sorry. I've forgotten who that was aimed at.

Don't know about hand dexterity, but get one with parkinsons and you've got an evening's entertainment sorted out.

Even if my reactions go completely to shit I'm sure I'll still be gaming in old age. Even if it would be just point and click adventures.

I just hope single player games stay healthy as I have lost all desire for online multiplayer. Its too much of an investment to get good enough to avoid being completely destroyed in most of them.

Brilliant start to the day though :D
