When I first played the demo I thought what a piece of SHIT this game is!!
Then I thought why is everyone loving it though? So I played on and now I think its bloody awesome.
I'm not a fan of the music at all (being a rocker) but I like it on lumines!
Will buy it once the price slips to 15 quid

Got the big mill, specifically 1,137,174. \o/

More tips for those trying to better their scores.

Quality beats quantity hands down - a simple 2x2 square is only worth 40 points but a huge mass can be worth thousands. Making lots of little squares will keep the blocks from building up but won't do a great deal for your score. Use the Hold the Line avatar power to pause the timeline so that you have more time to link lots of blocks together. This can also be really effective if combined with a chain block. Then tap the rear touchpad like mad to build up the power again and repeat.

Use playlists of tracks you're comfortable with as practice.

An all clear is worth a rather lovely 10,000 points so if you can manipulate the first few blocks of a Voyage to get 1 (or more) of those you get yourself a nice little head start.

Always try and play across the field and avoid making "towers" as much as possible.

Try not to complete a square just as the timeline passes over it or it'll get split in half which doesn't help.

The checkered blocks (those with each colour in opposing corners) can be a pain in the ass so if possible, try and keep them on their own, preferably on the right. This keeps them separate from the rest of the blocks which are easier to combo.

Needs a bit of practice but try this:

Set 4 of them up so that all of the same colour is in the middle:

    oxxo
    xoox
    xoox
    oxxo

The center blocks will clear after 2 passes. Then drop another 2 checkered blocks in the middle to make the following pattern:

    oxoo
    xoxx
    xoxx
    oxoo

Then the x blocks on the right will clear and the o blocks will fall and clear after that.

Drop another 2 checkered blocks on the right to copy the initial pattern and repeat.

Try and avoid getting a split in this pile or dropping a randomizer or chain block onto it as well.

That technique was clearer initially but formatting after posting made it incomprehensible. I hope it's still easy to tell what I mean.

Just won this on eBay spent hours on the original psp version. Was planning on only ever downloading games but i'll stick one in the game flap and leave it in all the time. That leaves only Wipeout on my wants list.

Had a right pain getting this to work when it eventually turned up today in the post. I had the demo installed but just put the game card in the slot. It then offered to remove the demo and update the game which caused a system lockup. Had to remove the demo and do a database rebuild to get the game to work.

From what I've played just now it's like going back to original psp version I loved years ago, just a whole lot better!

I think I'm getting better at this, but I really struggle when it gets to a stage where the blocks start coming down much faster all of a sudden - my brain can't work quick enough and it all goes to shit.

Can get consistently 100,000+ points now, which is an improvement on the 30,000 which was what I was getting previously.

Anyone managed to get the trophy for erasing 30 blocks in 30 seconds? It's surprisingly tough, I think the most I've managed is 21.

I got it after an hour of trying. I was just whacking everything out as quick as possible and got a good selection of blocks after another. I recall getting at least 5 one colour blocks which helped a lot. Just keep going you will do it eventually.

Okay so bonus happy points...I bought this for my Vita because the mrs absolutely loves Lumines. If I end up liking it then that's just a bonus!

A few nooby questions if I may:

Q1 Can you put your own soundtrack on it? I assume you can overlay sound using the music player but the sound won't build up like on the older Lumines games...?

Q2 Are there many games modes or is it just flat out...clear some blocks until you fill the screen?

Q3 Are there any dubstep songs on it lol??

    Cheers chaps!

Brought it on Amazon for 16 pounds, yet another game I really haven't got time for. Might take me off Virtua Tennis for a bit though.

I saw that when I was reading the user reviews on Amazon last night. Hard to see it as a huge down side, considering I've platinum'd the sum total of one game (Fallout 3) in all the years they've been there to earn.

True - certainly not a deal breaker, but the only retail game I've seen without one...

I saw it was down to £19.99 and still can't bring myself to splash for it.

I'll play to death the first few days and in bursts for a long while after that, I know, but I just don't think it's a full price game or even a 2/3rd price game. When it's down to the price I got Everybody's Golf for (£11.99) then I'll probably snap it up.

Yeah basically, but new skins unlock as you level up too. So either way.

Had another 'quick' go on Friday on the way home, pending my resumption of Stranger's Wrath. 45 minutes Friday and another 45 minutes this morning...

New high score, but still not even at 200k :(

There seems to be the occasional killer song/level where it's all about survival, followed by a number of more sedate songs where I manage to get the blocks back down.

Great game, but not something I have a compulsion to play over and over again...

The games last so, so long. I'm thinking about deleting this to clear space.

They do. Someone in another forum said there's no such thing as a short game of lumines. Quite annoying actually in truth

This morning on the train I couldn't decide between a few goes of Unit 13 or a play of Lumines - the latter won out because it's "electronic Tuesday." (I have music theme days.)

One single game lasted the whole 45 minute trip and I had to pause it when I got off the train! It really does go on a bit long - thinking of creating a playlist without the songs I don't like.

Agree with what Flying_Pig is saying - I can generally coast through most of it, being a bit creative about how I handle each block, but then a song will come along that makes it all about survival. Just wish the difficulty curve was more constant - it's like you're going through the motions and then all of a sudden there's an end-of-level-nasty to deal with.
