What controls do people use on this? The one with a separate right and left airbrake, or the default one with square as airbrake? Surely having directional airbrakes must be advantageous?

It is, but then you are stuck with using X for Thrust which sucks.

It is. Not sure how you can take of the corners in the faster classes without directional airbrakes.

Definitely - seperate air brakes on each shoulder button. It's the only way to fly.

If you're just getting into it, I'd also recommend turning Pilot Assist off. It's a paid in the arse, and you'll benefit longer term

Thanks guys, started reading back through the thread and came to that conclusion - also switched Pilot Assist off, which didn't seem to make it any harder tbh.

So what's thrust on the PS3 versions then if not X?

@monkman76 - Pilot Assist is meant to make the game easier, but you just end up fighting against it, with your ship not doing what you want it to do.

AFAIK - X is thrust on PS3 too, although on the Vita the X button is too close to the right analogue stick for my liking.

I've downloaded the DLC and am working my way through HD before 2048 - a wise choice?

You can change it to anything on Wipeout HD.

I moved Thrust to O, with fire weapon on X and absorb weapon on /\. That way I never had to take my thumb off of Thrust.

I would happily burn my Xbox and ps3 rather than wipeout 2048. And probably my big hd telly too.

    I fucking love this game.

@atomicjuicer - it's the best Wipeout since 2097.  Prefect for the Vita. Do you have the HD+Fury DLC too?

@Flying_Pig Yep. It's beautiful that their last game was their best and that they got it out before being shut down but I hope at some point Sony tracks down the devs again for a new wipeout on PS4.

Ack, the impending Vita price drop is seriously making me consider buying one again, just so I can keep trucking away at this beauty.

Sony also need to put 2097 and 3 Special Ed. on the store (probably not there because of music licencing). My god, the thought of having all the PS1, PSP and PS3 versions on one machine along with an exclusive (that's one of the best in the series) O_o

I just got this yesterday. It's great, amazing graphics, lovely to play. I am unsure of the single shoulder button for generic thrust and then circle for airbrake or something? Needs to be reconfigured to suit people like me who played it old school on PSX, Cold Storage FTW!

Really pisss me off that Sony disbanded the studio. HD and Fury were great on PS3 and 2048 is just glorious (loading times aside)

Just curious, why do you guys prefer this to HD? I bought HD recently and was really disapointed. Looks largely superb, but the gameplay is so fucking dull for a futuristic racer. Slow with wallowy handling.

I have seen some videos of 2048 and it seems to look better and faster.

All I can say to this: huh?

Maybe Wipeout is just not your kind of thing?

Edit: and who said we preferred it to HD?

For reference, are you the same guy that felt Ridge Racer Type 4 was overrated too? I feel like whatever opinions I have on racing games will be worthless to you, as we're clearly on different plains.

There are aspects of 2048 which are superior to HD, but my view is that 2048 really shines when playing the HD+Fury DLC

I cannot agree that HD feels 'slow with wallowy handling', but then what level are you playing it on? Anything faster than Rapier (Phantom?) was too much for me...

HD only feels slow at the slower speeds, later on it's anything but. 2048 may look faster because the trackside detail is much higher, which actually hinders gameplay.

    HD > 2048 imo, but then again 60fps > sub-30fps.

Have you tried playing Pulse on Vita Kay? Bit blocky but buttery smooth.

I've played a bit of Pure, but not Pulse, as I don't have the PSN version.

I played the UMD originals to death on PSP anyway. Both are better than 208 imo, just can't get into that at all.

I struggled with 2048 until I downloaded the HD and Fury content. Far superior to the main campaign in my eyes. Something about the combat focus and track layout in that...

    Say what?

That's still not that fast to be honest. Not only are F-Zero GX and Extreme G3 much faster, but the fastest cars on arcade racers Ridge Racer 6 are faster, and that's not even a futuristic racer.

Futuristic racers should be very, very fast - isn't that most of the appeal?

Admittedly that video above is faster than I've experienced first hand with HD and HD Fury, but what I've played so far is so painfully slow and boring, I really don't want to grind my way to faster ships.

It is probably my least favourite futuristic series tbh. I want to like it, but most of them just feel so slow and wallowy.

I recently played Wipeout 1, 2, 3, and Wipeout Pure, and HD/Fury. Partly for research purposes.

I thought Pure was the best of that lot actually.

But none of them even come close to F-Zero X, let alone GX. F-Zero is so fast and crisp and intense, you feel on the edge of your seat. I feel I could play Wipeout half asleep and daydreaming, it feels like a jaunty sunday drive compared to F-Zero.

Indeed. Don't get me wrong, I still like R4, I just feel it's one of the weakest Ridge Games. I much prefer lesser known titles like Rage Racer and Rave Racer.

R4 is still a good game, but it's slower and less colourful than other Ridge Racers, feels more sedate, less arcadey and exciting.

It's not the ships that are faster (there's some variation, but not enough to change how the game feels). There are 4 speed classes in HD/Fury, Venom being the slowest class going up to Phantom (there are more classes in Zone mode, but they can't be used in races).

It's never as fast as F Zero or Extreme G, but the tracks are far more complicated (Exteme G in particular was little more than a futuristic drag racer), and there's a greater emphasis on combat.
