I've never had a chance to play any XCOM games and the most i've seen of one is the new FPS so could anyone give a rough description? Would I be right in assuming the combat plays out in a similar fashion to something like Frozen Synapse, for example? And how does the real time "global view" play out?

I really like the look of this so will be keeping an eye out.

    XBL/ PSN/ Steam/ NNID - MatMan562

This article should be able to answer your questions about the game.

I'm setting my feelings to "hhhmm" for this one after the latest pictures and news.

I play the originals often, I'd be happy with just the old graphics scalable to higher resolutions and some UI tweaks.

Looks promising. Firaxis do great art for the types of games they make. The gameplay is the important thing and seriously, it's going to be hard to fuck up.

Some great news came out yesterday:

    http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/121/1216432p1.html

    XCOM Delayed
2K giveth a strategy game, and delayeth a first-person shooter.
    US, January 12, 2012

2K Marin's XCOM shooter has been delayed until 2013. While we liked what we saw at last year's E3, 2K has apparently decided to relaunch the franchise with the 2012 XCOM: Enemy Unknown strategy game that's being developed by Firaxis. This information comes from the issue 226 of Game Informer.

This takes another game off our Big Games of 2012 list, but there are still a ton of titles coming out. We're sad to see the shooter delayed, but at least we get to see the series return to its roots before the year's out.

Delayed again? Not sounding too good this FPS.

What would be cool if you could train some of your soldiers to be special forces, and make the special forces very hard to pass. Like it would be a risk spending money to send them on the course but if they passed they would be excellent in the field.

Really? That pretty much made the game for me, the risk vs reward element was almost perfect. Do you hold them back and let the squaddies/rookies take the charge for this one, keeping them for a more important mission, or do you let them lead the fray? Turning that off is on the same level as changing aiming into a QTE.

Getting attached to your soldiers was a big part of the investment in the game. Taking away perma-death would strip that out. I think Firaxis should expand on it, make some K9 units, perhaps sniffer wilderbeast, (discovered to be the best at detecting certain aliens).

They should also allow your team to have romances, pick the colour of their socks and give them hairdos.

Look, just cross it with The Sims and be done with it! I've often thought Sims 3 would be greatly improved by some Mutons turning up...

You missed a treat. There's nothing quite like stepping onto the surface of Mars and being fusion bombed from every direction on the first turn :-)

Video interview with Sid Meier. It includes some stills that begin to give more of a picture of how the game may play. There's also an article recently gone up about the music for the game.

Then what they need to do is prevent you from saving and loading while in combat...

Seriously, the rookies cost only 40000, that's cheap as chips. You can afford to throw them into the fire. In fact I'd never take any tanks with me as it's much cheaper to lose a couple of soldier instead.

Plus they're just as effective after a mission or two. Permadeath is crucial!

Nice. Looks like UFO, but modernised.

    Fine with me.
