Looks like this is finally available to download (I haven't yet tried it myself).
It gives you the options of sending messages, sound recordings and photos to your friends via Spotpass (so the 3DS will light up when they get a message and are connected to Wifi).

The biggest drawback is that it cant be used in game.
It doesn't have a keyboard so all messaging has to be hand written or drawn.
To use certain backgrounds and even the option to send sound recordings you have to use game coins, if you have none you better go take your 3DS for a walk.

I think whilst its not going to be as useful as it could be it will probably be a laugh.

    Here is a video

Seems a bit of a pain that so much seems locked at first - there doesn't seem to be an option to draw in 3D, for example. Still, I'll definitely use it (I've already sent some messages for when the time comes that more people have it). Time will tell if it's actually useful or not, but it's nice to have the option now :)

I just sent out a letter to evreyone i have on my friend list :) . I agree it is odd that it locks everything, but i love the animation of you writing your letter. Just ninty having that extra little imagination.

My friend code is 3952-6991-6389. Just received a very artistic effort in return involving poo.

Hmm no I've not got one from you. I've added your friend code just now, so maybe that was why?

I'm going to add you now.

What's reassuring is that everyone is sending out messages full of dicks and/or poo.

I know. I was thinking before it would be cool if you could send pictures with street pass, but the amount of filthy shit going around probably wouldn't be good for the kids! My son's getting a 3ds for Christmas and I prey to god I don't send him one of my adult drawings by mistake.

I was thinking it might be interesting to see what English people write in their messages, and what kind of pictures they post or draw, or sounds they send.

But after reading this thread, I'm think I'm okay with just sticking with Japanese friends for now...

    Add me 3995-6488-3940

I think I need to find a way to determine if anyone on my list wants to avoid being sent rude stuff.

Theo is quite letterbox artist. First a pooing man then some projectile vomiting in 3D. Classy :)

Embarrassing isn't it?! When I got Theo's vomiting man, seeing it being drawn was awesome. A lot more imagination is needed when viewing my creations.

probably shouldn't be sending offensive 9/11 themed swapnotes

I have added Crispy and Harriselhoff

    3995-6488-3940

Nintendogs photo feature might come good

Who on the EG forums is 'Theo'? Hes certainly one with his stylus. He sent me some rather detailed scribbles last night, men taking dumps and hurling vomit was the general theme. I was impressed and disgusted all at the same time.

And Crispy is offically a professional letterbox spammer! :)

edit: el_pollo_diablo is the man with the stylus skills, well done sir!

Updating the firmware, yet not including this and then not even advertising it = Nintendo!

Why would they advertise it? It's release was too close to Christmas for it to result in extra sales, and it was never supposed to be a firmware expansion. It's just a nice, totally optional freebie. Maybe it'll be featured in future advertising campaigns, but for it to be advertised on release would've been a money-wasting exercise.

I mean they didnt even send a notification that it existed, I thought it was builtinto the firmware until I just checked the eshop. Now I find I have 17 letter, 13 of whch are from crispyxuk, one of which appears to be a phallus.

I need to get in on the action! I've added Crispy long time ago but he never added me. :(

I did get one letter from Ignatius I think. IT was a Merry Christmas I think. IT really is impressive that you see the whole message being drawn in front of you .

It can be quite good but also a pain. Some drawing i've had are pretty good. I myself am no artist though.

As amusing as sending cocks is, the whole online friends thing is pointless and utterly shite, I can see Mowgli online but cant join his game on MK, so Id have to come out of the game, start up this shit, send him a message, wait til he quits the game to get the message then hope he boots it back up, which I wont know without quitting the game again.

    What a piece of shit!

Well that's not really the point of it. Some kind of group chat with the microphones would be far better, but this exists purely for the sake of amusement rather than practicality. It's better than nothing I suppose. You could use it to organise gaming sessions later in the day or week, but then if you have an internet connection you most likely own a computer or another electronic device that could do the job just as quick.

    @INSOMANiAC

I don't think it's supposed to be a replacement to the XBOX way of doing things.

It's just a very Nintendo way of sending ocassional messages to your friends. Think of it as an improved version of the Wii Message service.

Although Nintendo do need to improve the functionality of their friend system.

Just have a game invite or in game message service and its problem solved, its going to be a few more years yet before Nintendo realise people actually want to play online with ease
