    Not a single person sacked or charged, no confirmation of those 1400 victims receiving help and only one resignation in the entire council and police force. It's really hard to comprehend.

    Well that's what the Police said about the reports, so its fair enough really.

    FWIW the BBC changed the original report saying the offenders were largely of Pakistani heritage, to Asian. I have a horrible feeling part of this will be people tip-toeing around so as not to be seen as racist.

    I'd guess it' just to save face of a few VIP, similar to how the paedophile MP inquiry has probably been quickly buried under a D-notice.

    There was a piece in Private Eye about this, and the guy who is making the accusations of these ministers in the Thatcher era is extremely unreliable and has a history of being a major fantasist seeking publicity for things that never happened.

    Sad to see that the BBC reports on the ethnic background of the people commiting the crimes being hidden or covered up, then they go and do the same with their own article. Everyone is frightened to death of being called racist.

    Pointing out that people of a certain background have been doing this isn't racist for God's sake. It isn't saying all Pakistani men are doing this, but it is saying there's a problem in that for these men, white girls are seen as being worthless. The fear of tackling this problem is absolutely disgraceful, especially when it was on a such a large scale. As one girl said 'gang rape was a part of growing up in Rotherham'

    What the fuck is up with all this "scared of being labelled a racist" bullshit you get so much of now, why do we feel we have to tip toe around any issue that involves someone who isn't white? This is so utterly abhorrent, especially with things like the BBC edit the original article.

    I don't see what bearing their race or origin has really, a nonce is a nonce, no point in turning into a reason for racial hatred.

    It's not like anyone likes the starnies to begin with.

    Of course the race doesn't have any bearing on the act per se, but when a blind eye is being turned or the facts are being withheld because of someone's ethnicity then it very much does have a bearing.

    Yes that's all well and good but what does that have to do with the BBC editing their article?

    Hard to believe those figures, that's utterly abhorrent. The quote from the girl that gang rape was usual growing up in the area is... I actually don't have the words.

    Christ almighty.

    They might be downplaying the race aspect partly because they know that if they highlight it it will just inspire scores of meat-headed white football hooligans will go around setting fire to mosques and beating up anyyone that looks like they're from the Indian Subcontinent.

    Not that that's an excuse, but from the media's POV that might be a motivation as much as avoiding being labelled a racist is.

    @thelzdking

    I can see that point of view, but it's a double edged sword. Repeatedly downplaying something for fear of reprisals doesn't really help matters either.

    Yep. It's going to get turned into a race issue, rather than an issue about the cover up.

    Indeed, but why is it being covered up?

    The fear of making it a race issue and suppressing it, is what's helped fuel the problem in the first place.

    Yes meat heads will use it as an excuse, but it's valid news. It's not chasing after an entire race of people with pitch forks, but if 1400 kids have been abused in Rotherham and nearly all of them are by Pakistani men, it's wrong to suppress that detail. The problem needs to be exposed to make people and children alike vigilant and bring it all out into the open, rather than some taboo that can't be mention for fear of sounded racist or triggering a select few to go on the rampage.

    FWIW, the Radio 4 8 o'clock news began by stating these paedos were Pakistani. If it's a cover up, it's pretty incompetent.

    Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

    The victims identified their abusers as 'Asian', not Pakistani origin. I think the BBC changed their story because it may have jumped the gun at the time.

    Also, it doesn't help to focus on the race of the abusers, as that detracts from the issue as a whole. You don't see the phrase 'the victims were let down by their local authority and Police, who are majority white' in the article, for example.

    @senso-ji

    I'm starting to feel like people are missing the point here.

    The point is not "lets make sure the world knows Pakistani's/Asian's are evil child rapists", the point is that it seems people were not coming forward with information of abuse going on because the perpetrators were Pakistanis/Asian.

    Samira Ahmed's tweets, which are basically quotes from the report, suggests that if you're a taxi driver in Rochdale you should be worried about being identified as a nonce.
