Any ideas on how much would I need to spend to completely build a gaming PC from scratch that would be last me the next few years through the next generation?

Was initially interested on the Xbox One, but after the shit that's been happening since they announced it and the high price tag, I don't think I'll bother now.

Think I'll still stick with my PS3 for a few more years til I get a PS4.
700 - if you want an SSD in it.

(actually - that is without OS, Monitor, Mouse, Keyboard, Controller, and possibly being a bit elaborate on a case)

I don't even think that would be enough. Consoles aren't really directly comparable. I'd say closer to 1k at least.

    ?

I'm not sure what happened to my link, then - it wasn't an attack; it just reminded me of a bash.org quote. Here, try it directly: http://bash.org/?2999

Edit: sorry, I've got it now. PCs cost more than consoles, and mentioning that fact must be a negative comment, right? Pshaw, I know PCs cost more than consoles, and not just financially! :p

The best thing about this thread is sanctus pretending he's not getting an Xbox one.

If you think a guy who's 85k in debt and currently trying to organise his bankruptcy is actually thinking what console to get, and that when I'm talking about doing up my PC it's not just wishful thinking, you sir are a madman. I'm in the middle of convincing my son not to want one for Xmas, as damn that'd be hard to save for. And what the heck is a 9 year old going to play on either of these machines at launch? Knack? MS don't even have that!

Ultimately, though, I care more for what MS as a company do this generation. Generations like these are where companies make or break it, and the way MS has swallowed their gaming division whole suggests break. But hey, if it means first party games continue to end up on PC, and they bring full retail games to Windows as well as Xbox? Makes my life easier. Does mean I may have to get hold of a Windows 8 license, though...

Seriously, there's no way that for at least 18 months I can get either. I skew towards MS when considering what I want as I love Fable and Halo, and all my PS2 faves went multi-platform (Kingdom Hearts and FF XV both confirmed non-exclusive, for example) or never got sequels. With MS seeming keen to push back in the PC space again (and Fable 3 came to PC like the previous 2 had), I'm pretty sure that when I can even consider spending money ever again it'll be on what has become the most used device in my house that's not a cable box.

I know, but it's likely the only way MS will let first party games come to PC, especially after recent chatter about the new Direct X only coming to Win8/XBOne. Awful but true. Still, I'm sure Titanfall will just be on Origin.

It boots up nice and quick. That's really all the nice things I have to say about it.

Yes. Everything else is contrived, anti-user horribleness. I hate it.

    8.1 boots up even quicker.

But the new start button is a con.

Almost every Direct X release has been latest Window exclusive (yes, even the shit ones).

Contrary to whatever blogs pass as news websites these days will make you believe, this isn't a new thing.

Well yeah, but point is I imagine that'll mean a lot of devs will be limited to Win8. That's never good, especially when the majority of gamers are keeping Win7 alive.

Shit demo is shit. I guess something is lost with it not being a 1080p60 source video 'cos it was a bit meh for me?

How so? Dull tech demo that could push everything due to not having to compute any actual game, reliant on a huge amount of unconvincing particle effects to offer any wow factor. The only thing you could reasonably compare it to as a like-for-like product is the Sorcerer PS4 demo, which looked considerably better than this.

Anandtech have a quick play woth 4K gaming.

Conclusion? Two to three years until it'd used for mainstream PC (mid-range), and maybe the PS5 and Onesie2 will have it, which probably means something like 10 years.
