Just bought F1 2011 for PS3 and I have to say I'm shocked at how bad the framerate, resolution and screen tearing are. From memory, as a whole, it's worse looking than F1 2010. The handling is definitely better, but the headache I get from the visuals makes it unplayable. The framerate drops to half what it should be at points, and even the menus have tearing and framerate issues. I hope they can patch this because in my opinion it shouldn't be on sale in this state.

And I have to say, EG should have put more emphasis on this kind of thing in their review. It's made me wonder why there's not been a Digital Foundry article yet when the review was up a week ago. If you have the choice, avoid the PS3 version at least. I wanted to use my wheel so I had no choice.

    Anyone else feel similar?

The framerate was awful in 2010 as well though, on 360 at least.

It suffered huge losses at times during practices and quallies at certain tracks (Bahrain was hugely noticeable), and even tended to freeze for one or two seconds on frequent occasions.

It felt like the engine struggled when a large group of AI drivers came in or out of the pits.

    @SomaticSense

Yea, I had the 360 version of 2010 first, and only noticed a slightly lower resolution on ps3 when I switched to use my wheel. But maybe I've just become used to playing other racers while I waited for this to come out and now by comparison 2011 feels kinda yukky?

I do wish they'd lose some of that track side detail and focus on the framerate though.

What makes you think they had a copy of it for the PS3?

Just got the game and found the same. Technically it looks worse than F1 2010 easily. Framerate is appalling, and i'm just doing a practice at Spa in clear weather! The resolution seems pretty low because the jaggies are ridiculous for a supposed next gen game.... why?! Was playing GT5 last night with far higher detailed tracks, and cars (though not quite as many for sure) but was playing at near 1080p resolution at 60fps. Why can't Codies improve the graphics here, it's shocking.

Think the GT5 thing might be that Codies and their Ego engine can't yet afford to be as dedicated to F1 as Polyphony are to GT.

    @KopparbergDave

Not just me then. Yea the jaggies are very pronounced. I think GT5 spoiled me too. It has it's framerate/tearing issues, but they're not as bad or as noticeable as the game tends to be slower paced.

Bit weird that this is worse than last year's, though. Then again, I have F1 2010 on the PC (where it's great) and I played an hour or so of the Xbox version and wasn't impressed with the framerate or the tearing.

It's strange, cos the DiRT games and GRID look amazing (to me) on console. But, maybe it's cos this is Codemasters Birmingham (as opposed to their "A" team).

Codies haven't made a decent racing game yet this gen. Shocking turnaround considering their successes on Xbox :-(

I know I know it's only half the vertical resolution (or something similar). Fact is it's still much crisper and cleaner looking than F12011. Just been on Spa, going down to Eau Rouge, all of the white lines on the track just break up into flashing dots and lines the jaggies are so bad. The framerate can't be breaking 25, feels more like 20. It really is inexcusable.

Just kiddin' Dave, you missed a total car crash of a thread about 1080p (in GT5) last week...

Please lets not mention that anymore. I get these horrible flashbacks. :)

Gotta say, I'm enjoying the online multiplayer. Don't really have a chance to focus on the visuals when the racing is so crazy.

Gameplay over graphics wins it for me. Both this and 2010 have some of the best racing action imo. Makes gt5 look even more sterile. Looks pretty but racing isn't that exciting.

For sure gameplay over graphics, but if the framerate is low it ruins the gameplay for me almost every time. If I had to take one or the other I'd take GT5 because there's more subtlety and depth to it and it looks nicer, but I'll probably play F1 more because I like F1. Go figure.

Or maybe because the F1 games are trying to process a crap ton more. Not least of which the increase in grid numbers and the number of tracks.

I don't know if I'm being stupid or what, but I'm playing F1 2011 with my Driving Force GT wheel and can't accelerate time in the pits. On screen it says to press R1, but I don't have an R1. Any ideas?

It's probably the accelerator or right shifter paddle.

Unfortunately I've pressed pretty much every button, pedals included, and none seem to do it!

Just make sure all the buttons are assigned in the options, I can't think of anything else :(

It's the shift up and down paddles, they're R1 and R2.

I didn't try those, I did try the gear lever, but not the paddles. I'll give that a go tonight.

Unsure what to do with this.

When it works it's fantastic, but the amount of bugs is incredible, the wet weather bug is game breaking. At least the main bug in 2010 (the pit lane bug) had a workaround - I usually did at least 40% races and pitted a lap early.

HMV are doing a deal where you can trade for Forza 4 for £1.99, or I may trade it and re-buy F1 2010, which I never had major problems with after the patch. The other option is wait for the patch for 2011, but can they fix so many bugs?

A bit annoyed that not one review mentioned the bugs. I know they get promised that they'll be fixed for release, but it's getting silly now. It's so frustrating as there's an amazing game in there. And I do understand that F1 is a complex sport - it's not like Forza or GT where the CPU cars are basically drones, F1 has to accurately simulate tyre temps and wear, and damage for all the cars. But still. Gnnnghh.

I do enjoy playing on Quick Race, which is basically all I'm doing until they patch the wet weather bug. I hope they fix at least the major issues.

edit - from looking at the Codies forum the game is much better when played on 100% races, everything is scaled much better, may try that. Eek!

Just a heads up for anyone that's unaware. Codemasters have released a patch to fix some of the problems people were having with the game. And I have to say they do seem to have improved the areas I complained about. It's not perfect, but had the game looked this way when I bought it I doubt I'd have taken to the internet to complain.

Bought this too, then pretty much immediately sold it. Terrible graphics and tearing. Appalling effort Codemasters.

Anybody managed to put up with the game and still got it? Quite interested to try a season or two of co-op, give me a shout if you're up for joining. I was lucky enough to get the game as a free promo so I'm a little more prepared to ignore its shortcomings... :|

This game is the first time I've regretted buying something through Steam. No chance of a refund for something that barely scratches more than 17 FPS on my PC that can play plenty of other games on decent settings.

Serves me right though, being a cricket fan, I know full well how useless Codemasters are :(
