    @chopsen

    yup. It's subjective. Wasn't claiming to have objectively proved that 'Beat-boxing is shit'. You'd need a mathmetician for that, or something. I'm just a bloke.

    yup. Drums are a musical instrument. I reckon. I can listen to a whole album with drums on every track and not want to smash the drummers face in at the end. I doubt I could do that after listening to a whole album of beatbox!

    (it's the unnecessary showing off that gets to me, I think...)

    Given the Depeche Mode for one used the sounds of hitting random objects against things, and that the soundtrack for Prometheus uses things like coffee grinder sounds, surely anything composed into a tune or rhythm of some kind is music?

    I don't understand why people find it so hard to be objective. I find it quite easy to see the quality in things that aren't my personal preference. I don't think that everything that isn't to my taste is shit.

    @LeoliansBro That's Yazoo, but yes they do have a founder member of Depeche Mode in.

    Who cares?

    Good point.

    @kalel Some people find it hard to believe I can like heavy metal and Lady Gaga at the same time... all music genres have good and bad.

    I was thinking of the Ska acapella version.

    And acapella in general.

    LB, you really are a massive geek.

    @kalel

    Yeah. OK. You win. I can see how, maybe, if done tastefully, with none of that 'hey - look at me - I'm beat boxing, check out how talented I am' that seems to usually accompany it, there could be a non-shit place for the human beat box in music.

    Still don't like it when I am supposed to like a piece of music because it is technically difficult, rather than because it sounds good, though...

    @LeoliansBro Ska acapella?

    @RelaxedMikki A guy I used to be in a band with was such a pain in the arse because he only like music that was complex or used obscure time signatures and sounds. He just couldn't like anything standard.

    Though I got him into dubstep :D

    @kalel Well, just that your point about being able to see the quality in something that isn't your taste was a good one!

    Either do I, but I do think beatboxing is shit. That's obviously just my personal opinion. I appreciate the talent involved in it, I certainly couldn't do it, but I appreciate the talent in being able to fire ping pong balls from your vag, it just isn't what I would class as entertainment beyond the funny sounds in police academy.

    Local, opinion formed from watching a video doing the rounds on Facebook with lots of praise which reminded me how much I dislike it.

    @robthebuilder Yup. I knew one of those chaps. He once made me listen to a Mr Bungle record.
  • Deleted user 28 November 2012 14:50:53
    And for those that need it written down:this is of course my opinion based on my limited exposure to beatboxing. If you have some life changing YouTube clip for me then please link it. I would like to know what I'm missing.

    As is beat-boxing, or at least it can be. The Bjork album Medulla is almost entirely beat-boxing and vocals over the top, and it's most definitely music (and very good at that).
    This.

    Rahzel is legendary on this album too.

    @RelaxedMikki Nothing wrong with Mr. Bungle, Mike Patton is a fucking musical hero of mine.

    (in my opinion of course...ahem) :p

    @RelaxedMikki Haha, I don't mind Mr Bungle so much. He used to write things in bizarre chords and seemed unable to play a standard beat.

    We used to say that he would write music in Qminor34th key at 27/3 time.

    I feel guilty now. This is the internet. Somebody might read my comments who has devoted years of their life to mastering slap-bass. An art form that I have now decried as being almost exclusively shit.

    /hangs head in shame. This was insensitive of me. Whoever you are, I am sure your twangy, thumb-powered, wang-funk workouts really were what that shoe-gazing four-piece needed...

    Slap bass and beat boxing are shit unless they are done really well.

    Then they can be awesome.

    The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine.

    @RelaxedMikki I love the idea of a shoe-gaze band having a slap-bassist in it.

    Watch some band doing this win the Mercury Prize in 2013 now.

    Our shoe-gazing band with the slap-funk bassist was 20 years ago, unfortunately...! I'm not sure we can re-form and record our best track "Triangle" in time for next year's Mercury Prize...

    /is still not over the trauma

    Myth buster 5 is a crock of shit. Urinating on jellyfish stings does reduce the pain for a good amount of time. Happened to my wife :D
