'Sbeen a long time. (surveys the area) - What's changed around here ? Not much. It's like "Cheers". Look, there's Cliffy and Norm !

Okay, so I need something good to play. My tastes are simple. I really enjoy Halo. Love Left 4 Dead. Hated Fallout New Vegas (I just couldn't get the hang of actually shooting people and found myself killed by dynamite lobbers about a billion times before I thought "this is really boring and frustrating and I don't really have the time to waste on this. I'd like to waste it on a chapter-driven checkpointed FPS instead). I don't have a wide array of friends on Live, so it's got to have a decent emphasis on single-player.

What would you recommend ? Dead Space 2 ? Left 4 Dead 2 ? Doom 3 ? (I have actually played none of these).

Dead Space isn't an FPS. I say Crysis 2 or Bioshock, both have fairly lengthy single player campaigns, at least compared to many shooters these days which are lucky to break the 6 hour mark. And they're both awesome of course.

Doom 3 is great and the xbox version isn't too bad. Dead Space 2 isn't an FPS but it's alright (I prefer the first personally). If you love L4D 2 might be worth a look but it doesn't really add anything to the first if I'm honest just more of the same with different characters. In daylight.

Don't know how good it is on the consoles but Crysis 2 is OK. Far Cry 2 is flawed but good one to.

Far Cry 2 I really like if you ignore it's faults.

Another vote for this. Cheap, shamefully overlooked and bloody good fun.

Dead Space 2 is very good, although not strictly speaking an FPS. Borderlands?

Well, if you already enjoy Halo go through that series...Though it's no thread ender as it's not the best by a long shot :)

    (IMO)

Thanks everyone. That's saved me from a possibly erroneous purchase.
Doom 3, Singularity, and Crysis 2. Should keep me going for a bit.

I did enjoy Far Cry 2, but I think I have a problem with large open environment games with quests. I just kind of get bored of going from place A to place B to complete a mission (getting killed numerous times) and then forgetting where place A was again when it's over, etc.

btw: interested to see ODST recommended. I read reviews which suggested it was flawed ?

This. It's brilliant, looks nice, plays better and finds a perfect balance between old and modern shooters.

ODST is amazing. It got slagged for being short but its no shorter than most fps these days. And it has amazing atmosphere.

I loved ODST campaign (well, as a matter of fact it only has campaign, but anyway...), thae audio book stories is one of the best I've seen (heard...) on a video-game, it actually disturbed me a bit when I realised the prick wanted to rape the young girl.

I got it for 7 the other day, not played it yet but for that price it's probably worth a punt, even if it is a bit short.

The only thing that lets ODST down is the graphics, other than that it's classic Halo with a nice isolated atmosphere.

Yeah, ODST is ace. Single player campaign is excellent and it has better FF maps than Reach.
  • Deleted user 5 August 2011 11:14:07
I'm pretty sure the OP is well aware of Halo.

Yeah, I've been hitting Halo and Halo 3 over the last couple of weeks, not having played them for ages. I lent Halo Reach to a friend and have yet to see it again. Halo 2, is best forgotten imo.
ODST might be good then. Cool. ODST and Singularity it is.

    Thanks all.
