It's not rocket science. The console is not powerful enough or similar enough (weird controller) to compete on a like-for-like basis with other future consoles.

So it has to compete on its own terms. And that means having lots of good games that you can't get on other consoles.

It's ridiculously simple, and mind-numbingly obvious to everyone apart from apparently, Nintendo.
You're right about the power but not the controller.
A version of Tomb Raider or Bioshock Infinite could have been released with zero or minimal screen use and Wii U Pro Pad support.
If you ignore the screen the controller is just like the others.

They should definitely have more games out now, rather than later. It's as if they caught themselves off guard. It's got to be down to all this focus on the 3DS though, which needed to be rescued as well.

They did the same before though. Their hardware releases seem typified with a very barren and/or banal release schedule for the 1st year of life.
The difference is that things like the N64 and Gamecube were of similar if not greater power to the other competitors, so people were more inclined to get them on the promise of future software. They were viable choices as next gen consoles.

And the Wii was a very different console with very different games, so appealed to a whole different audience.

This however, is a fairly normal console in most respects, but again not competitive in terms of future. So an abundance of quality games is of much greater urgency than it was with previous generations.

I suppose it might have been "launch window" whatever that is.

Sonic, Power Stone, Ready 2 Rumble, Sega Rally 2 and Hydro Thunder were all worth a purchase.

Powerstone!! That's the one. Great game that was. Tomb Raider was in the window too wasn't it? Last revelation, or something?

I do agree that underpowering the console is a huge mistake.
How they can blab on about how it'll be different with 3rd parties this time yet know that with lower power it'll never get teh same development as it's rivals is beyond me.

The Dreamcast had a bit of weak launch actually.

The reason it's viewed as a gaming nirvana by some is that they picked it up after the price crash and scooped up the back catalogue on the cheap. Buying day one and waiting around is a different story, Rez and Shenmue II wouldn't be coming for a while.

All in all the catalogue of worthwhile games is pretty slim unless you import and like 2D fighters.

It was quite "Nintendo-like" in that it was a shallow but very rich catalogue. I had one at launch and while I was quite the fanboy and therefore quite forgiving, things like Sonic, Power Stone and Toy Commander was definitely good enough to keep me going for things like Soul Calibur, Resident Evil Code Veronica and Shenmue, which were proper heavyweight big exclusives.

I bought my DC not long after launch and got Soul Calibur with it, so can't have been that long after the launch of the console. (I realise I could gogole to check, but, hey CBA).

That was probably the last game that made me buy a console.

It was quite a few months after launch, I remember reading about it in magazines for what seemed like AGES.

I remember getting my DC on launch week with Sega Rally 2, Sonic and PowerStone. All brilliant at the time. Powerstone got soooo much play.

Think I probably spent close to 400 on that little lot (plus another pad and VMU).

God I miss Chu Chu rocket. Think I'm gonna dig the DC out again :D

    It did, yeah.

Jeez, through rose tinted goggles I really didn't appreciate how short a lifespan the DC had! I know everyone goes on about it being short lived but..

    JP November 27, 1998
    NA September 9, 1999
    EU October 14, 1999

I got mine for cheating at Quake 3, because I was really that bad. Hadn't even discovered wanking at that stage.

I'd kick the living daylights out of the producers of Tipping Point - Ghandi

Literally every time I see the comic book guy 'lace...the final brassiere' bit it makes me think of downloading images of pamela anderson at 56k.

    Good times.

DC was my first Scart console. Real arcade in your living room moment booting up Crazy Taxi.

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

Yeah, DC was the tipping point where home consoles genuinely were the same as arcade machines (in Sega games case literally. It was a big moment.

House of the Dead 2 was good in that respect as well (another decent launch game).
