When is this airing in the UK, and what channel? I think I got about a third of the way through book three and then gave up. I was only ever reading it on the train...and it took me forever. Kept re-reading pages because I felt like I didn't really take anything in a lot of the time (especially on journeys home).

Just about to start book 3 myself. Apart from the main characters there are tons of other peripheral ones whom I keep forgetting who they are. Doesn't help that Mr Martin likes to give everyone a name.

Having said that it's a good, gritty and untypical fantasy book (actually it's less fantasy more medieval).

I really liked the 14 minute preview, suitably dark and gritty.

Question is, will this be as good as Spartacus BAS and GOTA?

If it's half as good, and I expect it will be, it should be great :)

Funny, Spartacus was probably the biggest surprise on tv for me in a long time. I thought it would be terrible!

The preview is awesome. The production values are extremely high and it is beautifully shot. My only worry is that 10 episodes doesn't really sound enough.

    10 eps - that's it! Why bother?

At least they won't just cut us off in the middle, as with Carnivale and Deadwood. I almost blew up HBO HQ for the latter's cancellation.

I really don't know what to expect from this, although I'm glad the build-up's soon to lead in to the series commencing next week. I really like the look of the trailers I have seen. There's some kind of preview/introduction show scheduled Thursday night, I think which may be useful to watch.

Didn't they promise a movie at the time to tie up Deadwood? :( I've been rewatching them recently. Brilliant show.

I heard rumours of a movie, but never saw any kind of confirmation from HBO.

10 eps is for the first book, season 2 assuming the rating support it will be Clash of Kings, and so on.

The shorter than most American season's is why HBO are able to throw so much money at their shows, and as a result, often make some of the best television ever. So in my mind, it's not something to complain about.

Spoiler-free review of the first few episodes

    Spoiler: It's pretty good.

Interview with Martin about his books/the TV series/fans reaction to delays etc in todays Guardian here.

What I read of the series I thought was 'ok', though I did stop when I realised it wasn't finished. Don't do unfinished stuff because: a) they might never be finished, b) by the time the next book comes out it's hard to recall the details of the previous ones - lacks continuity.

Damn it. Everytime this thread is bumped I end up thinking its info about a couple of episodes leaking on the net.

Ah well. Not long to go now anyway.

The NY Times review of the series is pretty lol worthy

Yet another journalist who doesn't seem to comprehend that not all girls like Sex in the City or the latest romantic comedy and that some girls might actually prefer sci-fi and fantasy. Even going so far as to suggest that such a woman isn't 'real'. Besides, it's a terrible review that doesn't even discuss characters or plot (she thinks the long lasting seasons is the main concern of the series? Seriously?) It'd be sad if it wasn't so funny.

It'll never happen now, if only because of the difficulty of getting that cast back together.

I am a massive sci fi nerd, and a big, big hbo nerd, but I've never got on with LotR or any fantasy. What are the chances I'll like this. does it have a lot of "Brothermedor, house of Kandor, son of Grabimor" type shit?

I haven't read it but it's supposed to be similar to Deadwood and the Sopranos, Genre pieces that appeal to everyone through good writing and characterisation.

with the exception of the lurid and awful “Californication,”

    WRONG. Terrible review.
