    So, like, was I supposed to guess that I needed a ring from a boss in an optional area in order to reach the New Londo boss, or did I miss some glaring clue?

    @FabricatedLunatic

    It's assumed that you'd do the forest before new londo, but you know what the souls games are like :)

    @FatsoJetson The lightning guy. These are called prowling demons. I'd try him because it's a quick trip from the bonfire with no enemies between, and you are far more likely to retrieve a bloodstain if things go wrong. So it's a good learning experience.

    Prowler tips-

    Try to circle to your right so you approach him from the left. You really need to be able to withstand a swipe of his pole to your shield without depleting all your stamina otherwise you don't have enough. If you manage to get right up to him via his left side, between his arm and his tail, hit him on his left 'butt cheek' a couple of times, but don't allow all your stamina to deplete while hitting him. When hit too much he will leap away and slam down the catchpole upon landing, so roll backwards as soon as he leaps. He may also leap towards you while you approach, again roll back and try again. Basically, roll back when he leaps!

    He has quite a lot of HP to deplete, be patient, chip away, it's over soon enough.

    Try to keep your souls from that fight, Andre the blacksmith sells a very expensive goodie that's very worth it.

    You could try to traverse the abyss without the ring....muhahahahahahahahahahahaaaa.

    Try the forest. Look for a boss whose name rhymes with a popular brand of lemon drizzle juice.

    @FatsoJetson It's useful, though not essential.

    I'll add that I have NEVER beaten the things you face "going the other way", though...

    @EMarkM The cats you mean?

    You can still avoid them if you take the long way around after climbing the hydra ladder. It's a bloody long route from the basin bonfire though.

    I'd say the crest is well worth a purchase :)

    To clarify my learned colleagues remark, the Crest thingy will provide access to an area which can be reached going the long way around, so you enter through the 'back way' but the journey is far more difficult, and you end up having to turn back when you eventually reach the locked entrance.

    Am I best off trying to tackle the Darkroot Basin first, before heading to the Depths passed the Capra Demon?

    Let's just say I have about 25k souls perched on the edge of long spiral staircase. In retrospect that was a leap of faith I shouldn't have taken.

    I did fight a boss whose name rhymes with an animated image file, but I had my arse royally handed to me so I thought "sod it".

    @FabricatedLunatic Do that boss again: you have to, and it's not difficult.

    Did it first time myself, and I'm a rubbish n00b who didn't know how to do the jump attack until 130 hours in.

    Grab the souls and use a homeward bone. ^_^

    Yeah, that boss you speak of, you need to kill it!

    @FabricatedLunatic I'm in New Londo, too. Is there not a bonfire anywhere in the area?

    Truth. ;-)

    I also did it first time and I only found out you could slide down ladders after about 60 hours in :redface:

    I'm sure you can do it!

    Got me Crest from Andre. Killed the Titanite Demon. Next stop: Dark Root Basin.

    You guys with your hints and tips are making this game so much more enjoyable and far less frustrating then I found Demon Souls to be while trying to do it 'blind'.

    So thank you.

    Anyone else like to sometimes just potter about in the easy areas, farming rats or killing undead guards, acting like your all king dick in Dark Souls... just me then. :p

    So with his name rhyming like Marty Mcfly's adversary, is he after the many headed reptile thingy in dark root basin?

    @MadCaddy13 That's one route you could take: up the ladder and round the spinning Volebastards...

    For those of us who are even just a little bit ahead of someone else in the game, there's a lot of joy to be had in handing down pearls of wisdom and spoiler-free advice :)

    @FatsoJetson Use the crest. In the location where you find its use, listen to the ambient noise very carefully. Where have you heard that noise before? Can you see what's making it?

    Or maybe there'll be a convenient message nearby.

    Within the area you've unlocked, be ready for...fun! I will provide no tips or clues here, just that it'll be the place where you will probably make a final decision on what kind of character you want to be. Get ready to try out any spells, armour, weapons, pyromancies and miracles you have in an environment that's challenging, experience-building, and very rewarding.

    That's the forest. In the basin there are other enemies, but also a boss that's not behind a fog gate so has a habit of interfering with your business with a long range attack. After one of those hits you may decide you don't want to stick around. We can provide tips but right now our best advice is 'explore'. You have a lot of ground to walk over, when you have seen all you have to see there's the new area that defeating the Capra opens up, plus the area beyond that graveyard, plus another area which you haven't realised is available (hint: go up and down the lifts from Firelink to the Church, you don't have to get off at either top or bottom!). Bear in mind that you aren't supposed to be able to kill an enemy just because you can get to it - you can go around it or come back later.
