Has gaming or indeed any particular game introduced you to/ inspired you to do something else related to that experience?

For example, has the Wipeout series made you a massive fan of electronica when you previously weren't? Did the Medal of Honour series inspire you to read more on World War 2? Did a session of Wii Tennis get you into playing Tennis for real? etc.

The Sims led me to realise that I really quite like Techno. Sad, but true.

Gaming has introduced me to a lot of bands I may not have known about otherwise, Cage The Elephant being the most recent example because of the use of "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked" as the intro track in Borderlands.

    This space left intentionally blank.

NBA jam on the snes got me into playing basketball throughout my school years. In fact, I got into it so much I gave up playing games completely and played basketball 7 days a week.

RDR made me realise I love the Western genre.

Soon after playing I bought the entire spaghetti western collection and started listening to Moriccone on my iPod :-)

Hey good thread! Um... but no.

Probably. I don't really have many interests. I'm a boring person.

EDIT: Although I suppose one of the reasons I took up piano was my love of video game tune covers.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 made me buy a skateboard. Wasn't just me either - there were 6 of us, all nearly 20, trying to learn how to skate in the local ASDA carpark. Didn't last long though

I successfully negotiated a bad ice skid once thanks to playing various rally games with decent steering wheel. I'm sure I'd have had a bad crash otherwise.

In all seriousness, I did develop a liking for fusion jazz after playing Electroplankton.

Also, I became much better with routine cleaning and housekeeping after playing Animal Crossing.

I think that '80's and early '90's beat-em-ups may have inspired me to start training in martial arts, during that period I never really watched any kung fu films, I don't really play the genre these days.

Also playing the first two TOCA games got me interested in watching the BTCC and Powertour at Brands, Silverstone and Donington for a couple of years. Likewise MotoGP URT got me watching the coverage on TV for a couple of years. Both of which I'll watch if they're on TV and I'm not doing anything else but I can't say I'm an avid fan these days. I'd still glady attend live motorsport events at a track though if the opportunity arose.

Gran Turismo 2 inspired me to explore certain parts of Seattle when I was over there. It wasn't the reason I was there and that exploration was en route to other places in the city (I'm not that sad).

I thik Tony Hawk's 1 got me listening to Dead Kennedys and had me buying Suicidal Tendencies' Freedumb. It was a genre I was already listening to but I hadn't bought an ST album since Lights... Camera... Revolution!

CoD WaW got me paying some closer attention to some of my WWII newsreel footage as I have a couple of DVDs with sections covering the Peleliu invasion. In fairness to Treyarch some of it looks true to the footage.

I've wanted to visit Normandy to see the WWII beaches and towns for a long while, when I have been to Normandy in the past it's been with groups focused on looking at mediaeval history so not got to see these places. Brothers in Arms and CoD 2 has me wanting to see Pointe du Hoc, Sainte Mere Eglise etc. Naturally I want to pay attention Sword, Juno and Gold beaches too.

Grand Theft Auto 4. I spent a good few in game hours just pootling around in a very sensible manner, obeying stop signs and red lights etc.

I wonder if, by the time I'm finished with Monster Hunter, I'll want to go all Bear Grylls and rome the wilds, trying to forge pickaxes from deers' legs and bits of rock. Bear Grylls would be a lot cooler if he made more weapons. And set them on fire. And named them.

Civ II really got me in to reading about ancient history.

Rainbow 6 got me in to Tom Clancy novels.
