Had one real listen and enjoyed it, not instantly like I did with Neon Bible though but need a few more listens yet.

+1 for Engineers, is always nice to know that there is someone else in the world that has actually heard of a band you like :o)

It takes me months to get my head around a new album so I don't have an opinion yet, but after the initial listen I really like

    Half Light I and Sprawl(Flatland)

Is it just me or is it now 7.49 on Amazon, despite being listed as 3.99 before you click through...?

Nope, has gone up to 7.49 on the front page too, glad I got it yesterday!
  • Deleted user 3 August 2010 15:16:23
I'm looking at it now - here...
But if you click on it it goes up to 7.49. Damn Amazon.
EDIT: Blimey, they changed that quick smart. I was gonna grab a copy to listen to now but I want to buy it from an actual record shop too...

The cheap launch deals are for, er, launch day only, and that's made clear. I don't see the problem here.

There's no problem. It was just saying 3.99 on the search page.
I don't generally buy stuff from Amazon, so I will just continue not to. Everyone's a winner.

Was very lucky there, I got Villagers, Foals and Paul Weller all for 3 each on Sunday, now all gone up in price.

Anyways, I had a listen to a few of the songs on t'internet yesterday and was impressed, will def buy it.

I loved Funeral from the off, saw them at Manchester Academy in 2005 (or was it 2006) and it was one of the best gigs ever for me. Neon Bible took a bit longer to grow on me, but I still listen fondly now. Expect this to be more like that than Funeral. Also putting No Cars Go on Neon Bible kinda pissed me off, even if it is a tarted up version.

I personally think it is their best work to date. Funeral was good but the tracks blended too much for my liking. Neon Bible was better but just wasnt cohesive enough. This though, has great musical variety, flows from one track to the next and is a good length as well. Very impressed.

I'm hoping to pick it up on friday, though the album length does worry me. Not that I can't hold attention for 65 minutes. It just seems a little over the top for an album in my view.

    Wii U: Raiko87
    Xbox Live: Raiko87

Longer the better surely...it's not an episode of a TV show you can listen to one track and stop.

Well, it depends. There are obviously some great albums that are long (Blonde on Blonde comes to mind), but it's not as simple as "longer is better" (fnar).

In my experience a long album is far more likely to contain more filler. Which is pretty obvious, really.

    edit: wrong Dylan album. Embarrassing.

Oh I see, more likely to be quantity over quality.

    Didn't think of that

That said, a surprising number of double albums are classics if not borderline. Sometimes it's because the artist/management is confident enough about the material they reckon it's worth more to put it out there.

Probably an equal number of double albums are purely cynical marketing drivel mind you.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

Yep - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness could have done with being trimmed to one disc. It would still have been a decent length with the trimming I'd do, but there's a lot of filler on that one for sure.

Triple Albums are always bloated shit though.

Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) is the only song I can halfway stand. Terrible album, an almost absolute dirge from start to end. About the only good thing I could say about it is it seems like a set of reasonably well-crafted songs.

They played a show on Tuesday on Madison Square Garden that was streamed on Youtube and directed by Terry Gilliam.
Some of songs and backstage clips are still available on youtube, including a very funny backstage video with Terry Gilliam and the band.

I was watching an old interview with a few members, and doesn't Win look like Richie from bottom?

What a smashing blouse he has on

Tour tickets go on sale tomorrow morning (London, Brum, Manchester, Cardiff, Glasgow), but a quick hunt gives a pre-sale link here to beat the rush (it will probably have tickets available after general sale has sold out if it's anything like the Manics pre-sale: http://www.arcadefire.com/shows/

They are playing dublin, it just hasn't been announced by MCD yet. If you check out the On The Record blog on the Irish Times site you'll see a big old ding dong as tickets are rumoured to be 73 quid a pop.

    Edit: Here you go

We always pay over the odds for gigs here, particulary if they are arena sized. The reason given is always the transportation costs to travel to an island to play one show. But they basically charge what they want and stupid people pay it.

Thankfully I almost never go to arena sized shows.

I really like this album, it's taken a good number of listens, and I don't think there's any reall stand out "single" track, (except for Sprawl II which I love) but I think it stands together really well as an album.

Lots of very crescendo-ish songs that build up as they go along, with some real subtleties to it.

If I could say anything negative about it I would say that the female singer doesn't sing enough on it, the songs where she is heavily involved are always the best ones, and it seems like Richie from Bottom has become the only singer now...
