As some of you may know I work the Metropolitan Police, one the associations as part of that is running a photo competition, it seems to be something that is growing year on year. I have never noticed the previous ones but happened to notice this years one today, there are monetary prizes for the best photos, and I believe they then go into a calender for the new year, which has happened previously.

Anyway having noticed this years, I thought it might be fun to enter, having seen last years winners I didn't feel they were significantly better or worse than what I can do (maybe you will disagree!).

The categories for this years competition are Travel, Nature, Still Life, and Funny Photos, as I can enter two in each I thought I would try my damned to come up with some items for each.

The only problem I have is trying to make a decision of what photos, and whether they can be pigeon holed into the category. So I am after opinions please.

    Nature

    1

    2

    3

    4

    5

    Still Life

    1

    2

    Funny Photos

    1

    2

    Travel

    1

    2

The nature category is the one I am having trouble deciding on, so opinions on those would be appreciated.

Still life, I like the cigarette one, but I am reluctant to enter it, given it may be seen as encouraging smoking, having said that it is a unique perspective and maybe something different.

Funny photos, nothing technical there, and I am sure what I find funny others don't, with the cat and dog I just think the fun is in what happens next, and the family hopefully no need to explain why that is funny.

With travel I am at a bit of a loss as to what they mean, I assume they mean photos from foreign climates, but given I haven't been on a plane since I was 15 I am a bit fcuked. I would guess most people will enter landscapes and tourist attractions so the London Eye should fit in.

Thanks for any comments in advance.

Another vote for the wasp/hoverfly/alien invader here, the detail is superb.

1 & 5 in Nature are the stand out shots for me.

    Yay, I won a competition!

This shot won me Ģ250, and will be one of the images available to choose from when you get a new credit card from a major bank next year.

    Go me.

That's excellent, well done. Are you getting one of the cards?

Wow nice work kalel! A little unfair though given no one else has the ability to travel to planet Almerac.

Hmm, good question. Maybe they'll send me a dummy one or something.

I probably should get the actual card as well if only for posterity.

    That's great Kal.

Can you remember much about taking it? Lens, shutter speed, aperture, filters etc?
And is that 'as it was', or was there any digital manipulation afterwards?

I love the way the mist almost looks like liquid*, but I've never been able to figure out how to achieve the effect.

*Or indeed the liquid looks like mist.

    F11, with a shutter speed of...7 minutes!

I used a ten stop ND filter, hence the crazy "mist", which looks like liquid, because it is liquid. It's just the sea over a really long exposure. There was no mist.

Lens was my 18-35 at about 20mm.

EDIT: checked the exif and it was more like 30mm.

Very little processing btw. The usual really. Crop, sharpen, levels, tiny bit of colour saturation.

Congratulations, nice shot & a well deserved win. I always like long exposures of water, there's something very satisfying about them.
