If you liked transformers, have no like of superman to begin with or/and are 14 years old there is an outside chance you will enjoy this.
I loved it. Thought it was a way better update than Superman Returns. And up against stuff like Pacific Rim, well it's no contest. At least Man of Steel has a story.

/is not 14, doesn't care for Transformers, and has loved Superman since the 70's.

The VFX Oscar nominations are out.

Man Of Steel isn't one of them. Much as I dislike the film, they certainly were better then World War Z I thought.

    Elysium
    Gravity
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
    Iron Man 3
    The Lone Ranger
    Oblivion
    Pacific Rim
    Star Trek Into Darkness
    Thor: The Dark World
    World War Z
That's a bit weird. I get that the film itself is particularly marmite, but the effects were pretty darned stonking all the way through.
The Hobbit's were occasionally facking awful (Molten Gold) for a multi million dollar movie.

Oh and this, 100 times this.
Apart from I've loved him since the 80's.

I just re-watched it. I still think the final act is a bit push, but I do quite like it. At its heart it's a well-meaning film. It's trying to be a proper film with real worth to it. It falls down in a few places, but at least it tries, and isn't just a totally generic by the numbers superhero film. I saw The Wolverine as well and thought it was far far worse than MoS.

Both the wolverine and man of Steel collapse in the final act. But wolverine is definitely the worse film. Man of Steel has so much great stuff in it, but the final third is just so thuddingly dull. The action is so relentless it's overwhelming. Shame, as I really like the first chunk.

Finally got round to watching this. It's shite. 50% of the film is Superman moping around, the other 50% is somewhat dodgy CGI fights where you can't quite see what's going on.

It's like the entire adult Clark Kent part of his character was an after-thought. His romance with Lois was little more than a clichéd "you've saved me a few times, take me now" and for all the action there was in the last half of the film it was actually pretty boring.

And Zod looked like Brian out of Spaced.

    Yeah, it was wank.

Bitterly disappointed, and I've not got any great hopes for Batman Vs Superman, either.

No hyperbole here, but it really is one of the worst films I've ever seen. Just...proper shite.

I liked it. I never read comic books so I'm saying this out of blissful ignorance, but I don't expect to see a better Superman film: The Superman world seems so black and white (as opposed to, say, Batman's shades of grey) I can't imagine there could be a blow-your-socks-off Superman film. It's an impervious man taking on comic book villains. I don't see how you can do Oscar-winning things with that.

The stock answer is... what Donner did, which is make Superman's vulnerability his empathy, his need to protect the vulnerable.

For what it's worth, I really like MoS and the franchise needed a kick up the arse after the moribund Returns. It also helps that I'm Michael Shannon fanboy #1. Having Kevin Costner in there didn't hurt either (possibly only being improved on if they'd got Kurt Russell as Jonathan Kent).

I liked MOS as well. I was always more of a Batman man myself though so I liked the tone change. I still enjoyed the old films but whenever I saw Supes cleaning up an oil spill or having fights with himself in junkyards I couldn't help but think twat.

I feel like the whole "Superman is boring because he's invincible" thing has just become conventional wisdom at this point.

Superman isnt boring, unimaginative people just do boring things with him.

Like have him stalk his ex-girlfriend or twat around, smashing people through dunkin donuts.

After the last couple of films I can understand why people think he's boring tbh. He's just so bland now.

Nobody will ever beat Reeve, but they need to find someone that can bring a similar depth of character to him. A good first step would be hiring actors for reasons beyond being buff and good looking.

But they can't do what Reeve did. That didn't work already.

They need to find a new direction with the Clark/Superman angle and we haven't actually seen that yet from Cavill.

The new movie doesnt look like its going to do much for him, either. He is just a foil to shoehorn batman into action.

Which, to be fair, we should be thankful for since its not another fucking origin pic.

Being a good actor that can cover a decent range doesn't mean doing a Chris Reeve impression.

Cavill seems like such a fucking shit actor. Still not seen Man From Uncle as he's in it with an equally bland co-star.

I not buying that excuse about its what he's got to work with either.

"Hey, Henry. Can you do that again but be blander and more boring?"

    Hyperbole confirmed.

If you really think that it's one of the worst films you've ever seen, then you can't have seen many bad films.

Reeve played it as three parts, and not only that, but parts within parts. Kal-El is the main part, and he in turn plays the parts of both Superman and Clark Kent.

To play someone acting another part is supremely difficult stuff. That's one of the hardest challenges an actor can have. Reeve was a Juilliard trained Shakespearean actor. The guy had chops!

Do they really think a muscly pretty boy who's done one episode of Midsummer Murders is going to do the role justice?

I agree that Reeve was excellent and a skilled actor, i just don't like him in any of his roles.

Let's be honest, he didn't have much to work with.

Even reeve would have struggled to inject life into a part that required him to flex up, scream and grow a beard.

No, but he can't be the awkward, sweet, clumsy Kent and the stoic Superman. They need to find a new version of Kent and we haven't seen how that works in this version yet.
Maybe we won't, maybe social-facing Kent won't be different to the regular-dude Kent we saw in MoS.
