No it is pointless and I don't actually see any difference (most things I run with v synch). Just want to do it because I can :)

Christ, what is it with Scan and their stock? They didn't have the PSU in stock ("Item overdue since 7 September".) so I shelled an extra tenner on a higher one to make sure I wasn't waiting for weeks. The GPU was due in yesterday but now is listed as "Item overdue since 20 September", fuck knows then it'll come back in considering the PSU was overdue for 2 weeks.

And now the original PSU I wanted has magically appeared in stock.

    Bah.

You need to unlock voltage modification if you want to go for a significant overclock.

Get Asus GPU tweak tool to unlock overclocking range enhancement. Reboot.

    Use MSI Afterburner to overclock.

The 7850 is one of the best overclocking cards ever. A few people are getting 1300 MHz for close to 50% overclock. That's 7950 performance.

    Edited for wrong figure.

Yeah I am using msi afterburner. I don't really want a significant overclock at this stage, just to go up to the ccc limits. With the core clock it's fine and easy to go to 1050mhz, but the memory one simply isn't stable. Earlier on I managed to get it to do the heaven benchmark repeatedly and increasing it gradually up to about 1400 MHz (from 1250 stock) and it was fine. 1410 it crashed and then anything above 1250 crashed it again. Really frustrating. Am I supposed to tick the apply settings on startup box once I get to a point where it is stable? What does the power limit thing in afterburner do?

Yeah I've seen that thread. Doesn't really answer my question though. When i try to get the memory clock up that fast it just goes mental. Am I supposed to do it gradually?
Didn't see this on the last page. Memory is less important than the GPU clock, go up in small increments (say, 100Hz), test for stability. There are plenty of guides if you google.

That's good, don't seem to have a problem increasing the clock speed. Got up to 1200 and it seems fine

What's a good place for custom built PCs? I think I bought my current PC at dinopc, I'm not 100% sure I think it's been ...pffff 5 or 6 years since.

It started acting up last week, shutting down by itself, I assume for overheating, although when I installed a temp monitor the CPU was apparently at 45C which should be fine.

Might have also been the PSU but before I had a chance to test swapping it, it shut itself down mid startup and now it goes into repair mode immediately when booting up.

Anyway. It's an old beast and I have my tax refund coming in at the end of next month. So I think I'll go straight for a new PC. Anywhere else besides dinopc to check that has a good reputation?

PC Specialist is really good. We've had a main PC and laptop from them. About to replace that desktop computer as its over four years old and will be using PC Specialist.

This may be of interest to BUDGET PC builders, new AMD Trinity APUs next week - i5 performance for i3 prices. Plus added Radeon 7000 series GPU built in.

Nice, i know a couple of people who'd be interested in that. Good to see AMD getting back on the road again after a couple of lacklustre releases.

I'm posting this here in a slightly higher-footfall thread than the 1080p monitor thread. Any suggestions much welcomed!

    Help! :)

I've an old Samsung Aqua 21.6 monitor and having just joined Team Green with a GTX670 i'm now looking for a new monitor.

    I'd like to try 120hz, Nvidia 3D Vision 2 and non-glossy.
I've been looking at the BenQ XL2420T, Asus VS239H? and the Dell 2312/2412. I'd get the BenQ XL2420TX but they don't do that in the UK as there's 'no demand'.

I'd like 23"-24" and viewing angles aren't too important as i sit in front of my PC. I'd like vibrant colours but non-reflective screen.

Any suggestions? I'm prepared to go to about 300 for a decent screen. I'm getting old and can't be arsed knackering my eyes looking at bunk screens anymore :)
    Help me, EG-Wan Kenobi.

Any of those would be good but as a gamer, you might want to change the VS239H for the VS239HR. 14ms compared to 5ms response time for the HR.

Really dumb question: I have Windows 7 on a netbook. Does this mean I can download 7 for free to a new PC? How?

I have *never* fiddled about with OSs before.

Cmon Sparrows, just because you have a car doesn't mean you can download a new one.

Licence for the computer it was installed on in the factory, yeah. Not every PC you'll ever own from them on.

Quick note, I got a refurbed EVGA 480GTX for 110. Superb card for the money. Locks out BL2 at 60FPS no problem.

    (low Physx tho)

    @Dirtbox

Just curious, but if they wanted, could they install Win 7 on a new computer using that key, but lose access to the their old system or something?

I know when you reformat, install and activate using the key on the same machine you can use it fine. Of course that way you can't check if the old system is still activated because you've wiped it.

I never bothered to look this up properly, so interested to know how it works.

Out of interest, how much do you have to spend on a pc for it to play recent games on half decent settings (doesn't have to be top specs)?

I'm looking at getting a new one as my laptop broke and I'm very tempted by the idea of a gaming pc. Not had a decent one since about 2003. Building one myself is probably out of the question as I'd probably make a bollocks of it.

The alienware x51 range tempted me but read a few fairly negative thugs about it and have only seen reviews for the highest spec machine

I think the next gaming PC I get will come from Scan.co.uk

Won't be for a few years but they seem pretty good.
