    Comments systems can be tough places to hang around in. The noise, the arguments, the sheer number of people it can get a bit much.

    That's why we're rolling out a beta version of our new comments system. It's much like the old system in appearance and function, except we've added one extra feature: Karma.

    What is Karma? It's a way of expressing your love or disdain for posts. Take a look at a comments page, and you'll spot a little box on the right, next to each post. If you like the post, click the positive button. If you don't like it, click negative, and the post will shrink down, so you never have to read it again.

    Each positive or negative click adjusts the score by one point, either up, or down. If a comment gets enough negative points, it will be hidden for everyone.

    If you have a few spare minutes, please give our beta site a test. You can access it here:
    http://beta-www.eurogamer.net

    Any scores you give to comments will carry over to the live site once the test is over.

    If you encounter any bugs, please send them directly to me (craigy). I'll post updates here when any bugs are fixed.

    The plan is to test for the rest of the week, and then transfer the Karma system to the live site early next week. Thanks for joining in!

    I also notice the nice little perma-link for each comment just underneath the user names.

    Feels good to bury some of those comments!

    edit: And the "Are you excited by..." buttons on news stories about specific games.

    I'm all for new features and ideas, but do we really have to rip off Slashdot (or Digg depending on who you belive came up with this idea first)

    There's nothing wrong with adopting a good feature if it makes Eurogamer a nicer place to visit.

    It's a great feature, but as well as just hiding the comment, can you also make it set the poster on fire?

    Johhny: Take a look here. Each article comment has a set of buttons on the right for giving a positive or negative score to the comment.

    Oi loiks it!

    Very welcome addition. The only thing i don't like about it is my overwhelming compulsion to expand burried posts to see what crap someone wrote :-s hehe.

    Works well.....

    *edit*

    I like the little threshold drop down thingy as well.

    Heh - could use something between 0 and 10 in the threshold drop-down.

    I used to be a big comments poster, but looking at my stats I've not posted anything at all in the comments in over a year. Because it's such a clusterfuck out there.

    We're going to keep an eye on the thresholds. I think a set of natural values will emerge over time, and we'll shift the options accordingly.

    What value would you want to set your threshold to?

    Minor thing, If you've got your box set to show -10 posts can you make it so the comment doesn't disappear when you neg it?

    I mean, I've got it to show posts up to -10 but if I minus a post it'll hide it and I have to click the refresh thing or the show icon to show it again.

    I don't really want to hide shitty posts, just make the posters feel bad enough that they'll leave the internets to become monks on unstable volcanic islands.

    Also Blerk, hopefully we'll see you around on comments threads a bit more once Karma does it's thing and hides all the trolls!

    :-D

    Rather unsurprisingly, certain people are already picking up negatives and it's not even half an hour since the first post in this thread. The only drawback I can think of is that some undesirables might start posting more on the forum instead.

    If the new feature performs as expected how quickly would this be ready to go craigy?

    I'm guessing this is a beta test for an eventual roll out on the forums.

    That could be interesting. Clusterfuck-in-a-glass-factory interesting but interesting nonetheless.

    @Wastelander
    I see what you're saying. I'll have a tinker.

    @Cappy
    You should see the 'Worst Karma' moderation page. Certain users are already gaining large overall negative scores!

    @pjmaybe
    It's not coming to the forums - that would upset way too many people.

    My trialling of this system has led me to realise that farticumaximus is a knobend.

    Don't you just click update?

    @ Craigy I think 5-7 would be reasonable.

    Can you rig it so I get an automatic -50 please. I feel it's unfair on everyone else.

    Everybody commenting on a Wii or PS3 game gets and automatic -1.

    Can I have a script to ease this process?

    It's broke the site a bit here. Bottom comment is messing up the layout (on Firefox 3.5 anyway)
