DON'T GOOGLE THAT! Or do, it's actually safe enough.

Basically people that enthusiastically enjoy dressing up as animals, or in games creating animal characters and role playing as them. You know, pretending to be a cat and running around you until you "stroke" them, then purring and running off (I've never seen that happen, but that's the kind of thing I mean).

Not actually all that bad in-game, it's mostly harmless role players. But in real life... is this sexy?

Just be glad that no game caters to the dragons having sex with cars demographic. Yet.

I've been casually playing MMO's for years and yet this is still new to me.

It's not MMO culture. It's weirdo internet culture that invades MMO's.

Got CO all patched-up and ready to go - even as far as being able to get into the main-game login. However, the server is down for another 15 minutes or so, so I'll have to wait to see if my old toons are still there and if so, whether I can actually use them or not.

Sorry, got the time wrong - the server will be back online at 2 PM GMT, apparently. Still until then you can patch the game.

Ok, so you can indeed convert your Gold characters to Silver (i.e. archetypes.)

However, it's a very clumsily-produced interface, given that it doesn't appear to TELL you what the new archetypes are and it's all up to you to try and guess.

Also, the Travel Powers are limited and Swinging - the most useful and coolest - is of course, a pay-to-unlock power (and it'll cost you 375 CP. Thieving bastards - if that was a Turbine unlock it would be 50.)

Expensive game is expensive. Lets watch the car wreck together :p

Over priced "micro" transactions killed Battlefield Heroes and it'll kill this too.

The prices in the C-Store are fucking insane. Over 800 points to unlock TWO new character slots? That's utterly ridiculous. This switch to Fremium seems like a last-ditch attempt to get some extra players in but with these prices nobody's going to be sticking around for that long...

Hmm. So I caved-in and spent my ''free'' CPoints on Swinging - the points had been sitting in my account since I bought the game so it's not like it cost me anything - and now when I try to create a new character, some of the supposedly free archetypes are now asking me to pay money to unlock them.

Expensive game is expensive and broken, it seems.

Champions stuff always was expensive, I think on STO that 800 gets you 4 character slots.

Been almost 4 months since I logged into Champs, there was no-one I knew left and now I'm back into Warcraft.

They certainly haven't went to the same effort that Turbine did. LOTRO, when it went free, adjusted quests to gently guide you into purchasable stuff.

I still love CO though, but the C-Store for it is a bit off in its pricing.

Now I can't create characters - they're claiming they have a massive server load issue going on so that could be it, but I just spent ages doing a nice costume and that and then it said it had failed and kicked me back to the log-in screen.

    Lovely.

And yeah, they're going to be royally fucked if they don't drop the prices, as nobody's going to be spending money. That's the whole point of MICROtransactions.

LoTR and D&D seemed like they were charging you for everything though. Didn't you have to buy new areas, quests and even potions and the like?

I'm at work and haven't been able to check exactly how Champions works but it seems like they're going to be giving you the whole game for free and just charging for less vital things like particular powers and costume parts.

Seems like a better deal to me, but we'll see how things go.

Actually having had a good look at the store, it's not all that bad for permanent stuff like classes. It's the consumables that seem to be the worst, and these should be the max the prices get to, not 20% off.

Server load is predictably high, but it was always going to happen.

Yeah, for LOTRO and D&D you bought extra quest packs and so on but the prices were much more reasonable. Plus by playing the game you could earn Turbine Points which could then be used to unlock the areas in question - each Deed, for example, gives you 5-15 TP and a quest pack is typically about 40TP, so it's not difficult to unlock quite a chunk of stuff simply by playing the game.

Even Runes of Magic, which is totally funded by transactions, has better prices.

Yes, it's good that you get the whole of the previously-released areas to play but the stuff they're charging for is pretty petty and their prices are way off. 50 points or so for an item/unlock is fine, but not 400.

Anyway, I keep having a problem where it's taken to locking-out some of the Silver archetypes for some reason. No idea why. At least now I can create characters though...

Which ones? I know there are 2 Special archetypes that need Gold (or purchase), The Specialist and the Savage. The Specialist I can understand, as it mixes 2 very different power sets. The Savage I'm not sure about, seems like a fairly standard template.

Yup, it's them. I thought they were ''free'' under the new system. And yeah, I thought the Specialist seemed a bit of a hybrid-class but I thought Cryptic were actually doing something nice for once...

    Oh well.

Anyway, I'm having fun now I'm over the initial crap-ness of the way they've got it set-up. And as for the 2-character limit, in theory you could just have multiple accounts, couldn't you? Obviously you wouldn't have any of the perks/unlocks shared but if you knew what you were doing you could just work it like that, right?

Yeah, if you're just going to play free there's nothing really stopping you making lots of accounts. Every one of them will have some chat restrictions to stop gold spammers, but you can make more accounts if you want to.

I don't really see the point of the 2 Gold archetypes. If you're gold, you can use custom power sets anyway. Of course I'm sure it's supposed to be for Silver people to buy to get a taste of multi-class heroes, but I'd have had it so you could pay to combine any 2 archetypes.

I've not even been playing the game. I forgot how good the character creation is, so I've just been making lots of characters (I seem to have 17 slots, which given I'm not a fan of alts is plenty). I'll get back to actually playing sometime soon :)

Heh. Yeah I noticed a few new items in the costume creator - and some have vanished, too. Oh well.

The new intro is a lot better, too and makes more sense, as if it's more a cohesive storyline and stuff, which I like.

They reorganised it so, instead of branching of to 2 areas after the prologue, it's one fixed path. I quite like it this way, the old way needed you to create at least 2 characters to see all the early quests.

Yeah, I do like this one a lot more. Plus the first few missions seem a little better-organised.

Too bad the server is down at the moment...

I made my character using the trial version last week, so I've had to recreate him a bit because some of the items require a purchase.. but I think that's reasonable enough considering how much you get for free.

The travel powers are the only things that seem really quite expensive, but people are obviously going to be willing to buy them.

I'm surprised they didn't offer a couple of lower price travel skills. Some aren't all that useful as is, certainly compared to the freedom of flying. Are any of them free?

I had a proper go today, and I do like the changes to the core game. My favourite powers generally have all been tuned up to cause more damage faster. Plus due to a levelling restructure, I had lots of points to spend on upgrading those powers to make them even better :)

Most of the ''base'' travel powers are free. You get Flight, Leaping, Super Speed, Acrobatics, and Teleportation for free. Swinging, Ice Slide, Earth Slide, Rocket Boots and the others must be bought, but they are unlocked for all toons on your account.

    They're still overpriced though.
