Agreed. I suppose if you played dark first then fair enough. But I was like you - I was overwhelmed and didn't know what the hell was going on with it. Nearly sold it because I sucked at it at the start but when it clicked half way through 1-1 with a blue eyed knight, that was it. Forever.

Did a bit more exploring and got the crescent falchion, which is a nice fit for my magic leaning character, just need to figure out how to upgrade it

Deeper into Stonefang next, got as far as patches before deciding to head back to nexus (item weight limits are annoying in this game)

I actually found Dark Souls a lot harder than Demon's.

I recall hitting the jelly blob boss near the start (with the shields and spears grafted to it. Was it called Phalanx or something?), killing it in about 10 seconds and thinking "well that was fucking easy. What's all the fuss about?"

It got harder, but I don't recall ever being particularly challenged.

Dark Souls really kicked my arse though. DS2 I gave up on because it was sadistic for the sake of it and relied on pre-knowledge for too many of its traps, and the world design felt too disconnected.

DS3 is probably my overall favourite. Still haven't played the expansions though.

You have to remember when Demon’s was released to know why it is special- there was nothing that felt like it to play at the time, both the brave level of skill they demanded for even the most minor progress and that twisted and opaque lore.
While the Dark games might have bettered the mechanics of it I never lost myself in the worlds in quite the same way.
Yeah, this. Dark Souls never recaptured the magic of Demon's Souls for me.

I do love Dark Souls 1 and 3 (2 never clicked, it always felt like an earnest yet clumsy cover version), but Demon's is easily my favourite souls game, and Bloodborne trumps them all.

Can't wait for the DS1 remaster though. Think I might start a replay of Demon's in the mean time.

@spamdangled You should definitely get the DS3 expansions, I didn't love Ashes but The Ringed City is fantastic.

Was pretty close to beating flamelurker, shame the run back for another attempt is a bit of a confusing mess (with at least one fat bug you have to kill because it's blocking the path?)

Edit: flamelurker and dragon god down now

Think I might actually be able to finish this thing about 8 years and 4 other soulsish games after getting it

Nothing will ever beat the atmosphere and the feel of Demons for me. Even playing it recently it's still just incredibly....creepy

    Dark is jolly in comparison

    Love them both though

Why aren't they remaking this instead of dark souls for ps4? There must be loads of people like me who haven't played demon souls.

Sony published it and Bloodborne too. It seems like they want to reach as many people as possible, including a switch version, so went with Dark Souls instead.

There is a shortcut to flamelurker.

    It's quaddy's worst nightmare though :)

Is it that fucking bit where you have to traverse down that pit?

    Christ, it is, isn't it.

    Reroll I reckon :)

    Going past Adjudicator now

They managed to make the flying stingrays even more annoying in this section... Luckily I cashed in my spare souls for crafting materials to upgrade my Crescent Falchion before getting zapped

I needto get back to this. Not sure if I ever turned on online mode though... I was on the 'mine' world and up to a fiery boss IIRC. Might take some readjusting to...

    Oh god.

    5-2 is such a mess

Getting glitches and frame rate drops far worse than anything I saw in Dark souls. Everything stuttering and audio being unbearable while try and dodge jellyfish and shit goblins.

Chunks of the environment aren't even streaming in properly half the time. Guessing it's not this bad for most players right?

Edit: Looking into it a bit more, suspect this area may be causing my aging PS3 to overheat and run into problems (have had much less frequent audio glitches before, but restart fixed them). I sure hope this game doesn't kill my console, still have Yakuza 5 to play through!

Will clean out the fans tomorrow I think

Hm I don't remember it stuttering in world 5. Sounds a bit odd

Decided to try it again this morning, didn't have any issues this time

Can only assume the PS3 was overheating a bit or there was some other problem that was solved by a PS3 restart. Played much longer sessions before without issue, but might have been a bit of bad luck.

Anyway, decided to upgrade my flame sword, equipped the thief ring to sneak past the giants (who would one shot me), got through the swamp and shanty town, opened up the shortcut and called it there. Really glad to not have to do that section again, but it really wasn't that bad once I was free of the glitches I had before.

Had audio stuttering glitches a few times in this game before, but quitting to the menu and loading again would solve those. What I got last night though was a lot worse than those, if I couldn't get past this I would probably abandon the game right there because it was nearly unplayable

    @the_dudefather

Hopefully it was a one off. And now the shortcut is open you should be ok.

What's your favourite level so far then?

    Definitely 3-2 for me

Hard to beat 1-1 as a first time Demons Souls experience, the path to the fortress is pretty impressive, decent variety of areas to explore and surprises

The first time going through (especially when you haven't played a game like this before) is really tense too

I like 3-1 too, a lot of stretches with few enemies which makes it pretty eerie (helped by some good spooky sounds too). It was interesting to see a bit of a stealth element in this game too, found myself sneaking around some of the mindflayer patrols, going from pillar to pillar to avoid their line of sight

Yes, agree with 1-1 from a first time perspective. First time I saw a red eyed knight and all the messages on the ground, I knew shit was about to get pretty real. And it did.

Yup, I love world 3 in general

I think 1-1 is still my favourite area. Despite everything that came after it, looking up at the outer wall of Boletaria Castle for the first time is the image I always recall when I think of this game. 3-2 is a close second.

4-1 is my favourite, it's just so evil. You think it's quite straightforward but it's full of traps

Lots of souls on offer too for my greedy eyes

Boletaria is great, but 3-2 is my favourite, just for that massive thumping heart in the middle. The other levels are lonely, but Latria is flat out oppressive.

3-3 is a close second just for the boss. Most ingenious boss encounter ever devised, and I remember being a complete dick to people just for a chance at the Old Monk head collar.

Dirty colossus dead now, but now have no clue how to get past Garl Vinland (without getting smashed in one hit)

And I can't believe he's in this thread, posting, mocking me from outside the game :D

You can go and face him, or you could go the other way and avoid him completely.

However. Be *very* careful of the swamp below

Parry and riposte him - just don't miss and you'll be ok

and don't let him heal, hit him with an arrow or magic when he tries

Will probably try parry again, couldn't quite get the timing down (and don't get many attempts before getting killed)

At least it's a short run back for more attempts!

Haven't managed Garl yet, so went elsewhere for the moment

Up to Maneater now, knocked off a few times, but think I'm starting to get the hang of the fight (try to get tail off the first one and do as much other damage before the other shows up, fighting mostly around the brazier

Annoying that the first one can end up flying around so much that you barely get a chance to get damage, but wonder if this is due to going to the brazier too early, giving it less room to land in...
