I start university in early October, and I would like to get a laptop before then ideally - and top of my list is a MacBook.
BUT: there are loads of rumours of new MacBooks sometime in early-mid October, so it would be annoying to get one now only for a new model to be released in a few weeks...

I've read in a few places however, that if you buy an Apple product within a month before an upgrade, they will replace/upgrade it for free. Is this true? And if so where is the best place to buy and ensure that I get this service?

So it's an actual policy then?

There were strong rumours of a new macbook at the start of this year but I bought one anyway. And it never happened. I would just go for one now, they are great and if it does happen you do have like 60 days cover (I think).

Well it's not quite like that. If you order an old model, and they announce a new model BEFORE you receive your old one, then they'll send you the upgraded one at the same price (or lower price if they drop the price).

However, if you buy one on Monday, receive it on Tuesday and they introduce a new model on Wednesday then you're screwed.

edit - 60 days cover? I might be wrong then, but I don't think so.

edit 2 - but yes wait until the end of next week, it is highly likely that upgrades will be announced in the next few days, the rumour sites have been reporting this for weeks.

    say no to Eurogamer sigs

I'll wait for a week then, there's no real rush for me to get until october anyway.

Mowgli: what does the 60 days cover include?

Sorry I have no idea, It was just at the back of my head and the number seemed correct. I'll have a look around when I get back from work if you are still curious.

Spy shots are out and the MacBook Pro is not available with a matte screen. Let the internet shitstorm commence!

Y'know that would *almost* have been a deal breaker for me.

Makes sense seeing as they are going to allow developers to tap into GPU power in the next OSX for general processing. Plus I guess it's easier to turn one off, than to find one which can run at half speed in power saving mode.

No way I can afford a MBP a few months after an iMac, so I'm really hoping they update the Macbook range as well with something half decent. a cheap portable mac would be rather spiffy.

The luddite in me says that track pad will take some getting used to.

And its kind of strange that they seem to be phasing the 17" version out. I guess people really are going smaller. Couldnt live without mine, though *hugs*.

17" may come out later, it's often lagged behind the main range. New MacBooks sound great but no FireWire, and the Pro only has a single FW800 port. Maybe new Cinema Displays tonight too. 6pm kick off I think our time?

They are apparently, they'll also have an nvidia GPU.

Ah yes, looks like they are keeping the lowest end macbook and knocking it down by 50, then replacing the two higher end models with mini versions of the new mbp designs, abiet with slower cpu speeds than the previous models but including the fancy new graphics card.

not sure I like the cpu speeds being slower than before, that fancy new graphics card isn't all that much use for desktop apps until the next OSX hits.

That is shit about the FW.

I use my work macbook for tossing around video editing and ive got a FW hard drive which now wont work with the new MBP.

Not that im planning on getting a new one, since my MBP is only a year oldand the MB was bought after the last hardware revision, but still.....

Again, it sounds like feature trim of the things people just dont use.

No no, the MB Pro will have FW800 (and therefore FW400 via adaptor). It's the little MacBook that loses FW completely (stupid move, it's a man's port!).

    Oh yeah, just re-read it.

The wife will be pleased as its essentially her work laptop and mobile edit box. But, again, not planning on upgrading any time soon.

    MUST. RESIST. NEW. BLACK. KEYBOARD

I doubt there'll be a new Mac Mini. They seem to hate that model :(

Will hang on to see the new MacBook, I assume it will be just aliminium as apose to the black / white?

Also, does this mean the BlackBook will come down much in price soon? as I am not a heavy user so I might just grab one of those cheap.

Not really. Speaking as someone whos wife uses her Pro for business (editing) I cant really think of a reason to include a BR player, tbh.

Anyway, I'm going the hackintosh route if there is no new mini.

I dont know which model you have, but I put a new t2600 DC processor, more memory and a dual layer DVD burner in one at work and it flies now.

Just imagine how sexy a Mac mini could look in the new aluminium and black format. Doubt we'll ever see it though.

I love them. They are brilliant for the editors here who dont need a powerhouse for rendering stuff or doing a lot of 'shopping.
