Apparently he went out for that mutual friend's birthday last week and got completely smashed, hated himself for it and has now committed to stop drinking. He is a binge drinker - whenever we got together it would inevitably end up in a heavy session. We're due to go out this weekend, but he's already told me he won't be drinking.
